hard disk error

I have a SMART hard disk error '301' on my laptop.

I have warranty with curry's that have a 'Know How' service, they repair your product and give you a replacement which I have used for various other issues in the past. I assume they will replace the hard disk but does this mean I have lost all my files, I have a lot of photos and videos on it that I unfortunately never got round to backing up. Is there any chance of them being able to back it up?

Doubt they will back up but you can ask them here.

Try using linux to back up stuff.

It turns on but it won't load up, an error screen just appears, the same as this

Data recovery is probably possible, but is not usually covered under warranty (it is your responsibility to back up your files).
Data recovery is expensive, so you'll have to give it some consideration to decide whether it is worthwhile or not.
One company that does this work.

I've done some research on recovering old files on my own, do you know much about these?

some people say that depending on how damaged your hard disk is it is possible to get the files back this way

Currys will absolutely and totally loose all your data.

Probably your complete laptop, charger, receipt and warranty also.

That adapter is for an old IDE drive. So it's not likely to be relevant to your (PC?/ Laptop? ) seeing that it is still in warranty.

Do you intend to remove the damaged hard drive from the laptop and connect it to another working machine? If so you will want a SATA to USB connector instead, but I would discourage this as Windows can choke / hammer a failing hard drive connected by USB in it's attempts to read and repair it.

A Smart 301 error is an imminent failure warning, so there ought to be the possibility of getting essential data from it without the highly expensive type of recovery service.

So is it a laptop or PC, windows or mac? Does it have a CD/ DVD drive?

To recover files in a normal (windows laptop, dvd drive) I'd recommend just buying a normal USB external drive of greater size than the existing laptop hard drive. Then I'd use a bootable linux CD to copy data from it in order of importance, preferably using gddrescue or clonezilla

Curry's will likely not recover data for free under the warranty, you'll need to pay someone to do this if you are not confident in doing this yourself.

so you mean that if I buy a new external usb drive and plug it in to the laptop that I will be able to access the files from the old hard drive providing I used the Linux CD? can you link me to where I can get the cd?

Yes what you explained about connecting the hard drive via usb to a different laptop was what I had in mind.

A Clonezilla device to device copy, software available at
    CD image downloadable from...
    http://freefr.dl.sourceforge.net/project/clonezilla/clonezilla_live_stable/2.1.1-25/clonezilla-live-2.1.1-25-i486.iso

    A walkthrough available at
    http://clonezilla.org/show-live-doc-content.php?topic=clonezilla-live/doc/03_Disk_to_disk_clone

Just make sure not to choose the old disk as the destination for the clone.
