Help needed reinstalling

    Hi all,

I'm trying to repair my parents mac, I mainly use pcs myself, from reading other threads I've come to the conclusion that I need to do a archive and install, the mac is running 10.6.8, bought in Jan 2010, I can't seem to find the option to archive and install anywhere, I've got the disc needed and have booted using that, I need a way to backup the mac before re-installing the os, and it just hangs is I try back the data up on an external drive!

Anytime I try open anything it seems to just hang with a little colored wheel and doesn't respond to anything at all!

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Gillen

It's normally on the page where you select the volume to install to. Click the volume and then the Options button on that page. That'll give you the install options.

I tried that, I selected the volume I want to install the Os on but it only give me an option to install, can't seem to see anything about backing up

I wonder if the hard disk could be bunched? That could explain why it's freezing when trying to copy to an external disk. Might be worth running the Apple Hardware Test on it. I'm sure someone else on here might be able to explain better though.

I've read back on previous threads and tested the HD, it didn't report back any faults

Archive and Install has been gone since 10.6. The standard install does basically the same thing, except it doesn't keep your old system folder.

The hard drive may be failing. Disk Utility isn't much use. Back up the most important files manually and re-install. Preferably a clean install.

In that case I'd buy a copy of Disk Warrior and boot up from that. Use it to carry out directory repairs. You should then be able to boot up the Mac and use Carbon Copy Cloner or similar to copy all files onto an external drive. Store it somewhere safe.

Once everything is working, set up Time Machine to make automatic copies to another external drive.

set up Time Capsule and select your device to back up to
