Ulcerative Colitis/Crohn's and Exercise

    Hey everyone, hows she cuttin?

So, basically I was diagnosed with colitis a few months ago and had a bit of a rough patch in hospital. I lost a lot of weight and muscle and had a few problems. At the moment I'm doing well thanks to Imuran (125 mg a day) and Pentasa (8 x 500mg tablets a day) and I'm beginning to exercise again with the aim of getting into adventure racing etc. What I'm wondering is whether anyone has experienced problems with their colitis/crohn's due to exercising. Are you allowed to push your body as you could before, or do you have to be wary of any strenuous exercise?

Also, if you do experience trouble, is it specifically related to certain exercises, such as abdominal crunches?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

I have UC and have never had any problems with exercise (except for the fact that I should do more!). The only issues that I could envision are exhaustion, due to UC, or complications after having surgery (that is, over stressing an area). Also, staying hydrated and keeping electrolytes balanced would be particulrly important due to the nature of the disease.

You know your body better than anyone so you know what you are able for and what is "too much" for you - just pay attention to how you feel and you should be fine. Obviously, if you are at all concerned the best person to talk to about this is a medical professional.

    Hi,
I was browsing through the site patientslikeme.com earlier today. It has a blog on it, from someone with Crohns, who
started training/weight training, and several years latr, feels a hell of lot better....Good Luck.

I found exercise a great reliever of any stresses that would may be enhancing my flare ups. I suffered for 7 years, dropped weight severely and was about to have major surgery when I found a product called carageena was the main cause of my flare ups. Can't spread the word enough and emphasise the importance of changing your diet. Look it up you will be amazed!

I have an appointment with a specialist soon and I'm just wonder what tests or whatever i can have to be diagnosed with ulcerative colitis ?

Colonoscopy with biopsies, usually an endoscope is done at the same time into the stomach. Very pleasent. Blood tests to show inflammatory markers are generally done too.
