Smoothing mdf cut edges and painting

I have some shelving just put up and the cut edges are not smooth, i sanded best as possible using a power sander but its still not smooth.
I painted it then with a 50:50 water pva mix at the weekend and and a oil based primer and intend next weekend on sanding the edges again but i dont think its going to go as smooth as I like.
The plan is to paint the shelving with two more layers of gloss or satinwood paint (undecided yet) , but i don't think the additional two layers will give me a nice smooth finish at the edges.
Any suggestions? Was in Woodies over the weekend but didn't see anything that seemed suitable - like spackling paste i'd read about online.

What do people normally do to get a smooth finish on cut mdf edges?

You need to sand the edges to a glossy smooth consistency with the sander before painting. I usually do this with an air sander and 180 grit sandpaper. You will see the edges turn from brown to a whitish brown colour. You will see the difference when sanding
