Can a member of staff refuse to serve you in a restaurant? i heard of a situation where this happens. I would have thought the person behind the counter would have to serve you unless management told them not to and they haven't. Not seeking advice just curious

Yes, as long as it's not for one of these reasons. Other than that you can make a complaint to the management and hope that their internal disciplinary process does something about it.

But if management tell them to serve the person they would have to or be deemed to be not doing their job?

Possibly but staff are not bonded to the manager like some sort of slave. Manger would have recourse through a properly run disciplinary process or informal discussion.

That is an internal matter. It may be that the refusal of service is carried out in a defamatory manner and the potential customer could sue.
There can be many good reasons for refusing service. The establishment may not want to state the reason publicly. Some people behave obnoxiously towards staff in restaurants and staff members may not wish to serve them.
