    Hello all,

I have just had a UPC connection set up in my house and I'm having intermittent connection problems. I have tried rebooting the modem and checking all cables are secure and rebooting my pc which seems to resolve the problem temporarily but I've no idea how to troubleshoot this further. I am getting the below DNS lookup error.

I've tried looking at various forum threads but I'm totally confused about the basics, could someone walk me through this?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm hoping someone will feel sorry for me and become interested in this! It does seem strange, yesterday I had a good connection for up to three hours and then today I connected again and after seven minutes was getting DNS errors.
Samsung Netbook Windows XP, the wireless seems to work on other wifi networks without any problems. Each time I refresh the connection it solves the problem for a while before it drops again.
I can't replicate the problem when connected via cable, so I'm wondering is this a pc setting specific to the wireless network? My Android phone doesn't experience any problems on the same wireless network. I have tried changing the wireless channels from 1 to 6 and this seems to make no difference so I'm wondering is it to do with my wireless card on my netbook?

    Please help!

Subsequently have logged a ticket with UPC, we'll see how that goes...

What are your DNS settings in your wireless card properties?

It's set to set DNS Server automatically. I've had a connection for ten mins so far with no problems this evening.

Maybe try the google dns just to see if it will make a difference?

I'll give it a go and see if it helps. I'll report back if it doesn't.

Hi, I've been using the Google DNS and sadly the problem is persisting. I'd already changed my wireless channel from 1 to 6 but I've been on to UPC and they've changed it again and told me to report back if this doesn't resolve the issue. Do you think it's a local problem with the wireless card? They seem to think there's no signal issue or it wouldn't be intermittent and have done various checks but I'm not too sure what they've done at all.

    Thanks again

Are there any other wireless items in use in the house? You could download inssider and check what networks are around you

Although the issue does seem related to dns:(. Do you by any chance know anyone else with UPC but with an older modem that you could possibly try the net book with?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless card just in case it's holding some unusual setting also do you only use chrome as your browser?

We have a few wireless devices set up. Namely two Android phones an iPod Touch and an old iBook which really has just become a music station.

I've downloaded inssider to have a look at the channels and see if that helps further.

At the moment the connectivity is intermittent but it only seems to be dropping on the Samsung N140 (XP).

I don't know anyone with a UPC connection and alternate modem that I can think of but it's something to consider.

The strange thing is that this netbook works fine on a separate Eircom wireless network so I'm not sure exactly what the problem is; for the most part it's fine on this connection too it's just that it's dropping from time to time.

I've just tried flushing the DNS to see if this will help but really I'm just fiddling around without really knowing what I'm doing. I also changed the DNS settings on the router to the Google Public ones to see if this would make a difference.

Any advice would be much appreciated as I'm trying to figure out just what the problem is. UPC seem out of ideas but are floating the idea of setting up a new wireless network with different network i.d. etc. I'm not sure that will resolve the issue if it's local to the netbook so holding off on that for the moment.

    Thanks

    Hey GenericStranger,

Did you get any solution to this? We have multiple devices on wireless, managed to find a decent wireless channel. However I have a wired pc aswell which still gets the DNS error intermittently. Thinking its probably my router but would love if there was an easier fix then replacement :S

    Thanks for any thoughts.

Yea I have my xbox hooked up with network cable and in the DMZ. Its fine most of the time and I cannot believe the amount of lag that wireless was causing at times.

Do not even bother using a PS3 on wireless, the adapter in them must be terrible. I have it hooked up with a cable now too and with UPNP enabled it works fine.

Unusual thing is that I had heard you could not have UPNP and DMZ simultaneously, however thats how I am running it and its fine.

Still have stupid DNS errors all the time on computer though :(
