Where abouts are you in Dublin? Do you have any experience and what languages do you want to learn or just the concepts of programming?

I live on the northside, I haven't got much experience , I've been watching tutorials and trying to teach myself. The course i'm starting in September has a lot of JAVA in it so i'll need to learn that but I want to learn the basics first HTML , CSS, JavaScript, and ye once I understand the concepts of programming a bit better I think i'll pick it up quick enough.

Pick one language and get to know it. HTML, CSS, Javascript are a different skill set to the likes of Java, C, C++. If your going to be doing alot of Java start with that before moving on

What course are you studying? Is it in Trinity?

I'm doing CS and business in trinity. First year there is a lot of Java but it's not too hard once you get your head around it. Most people found it difficult because they weren't thinking like a programmer and refused to understand the basic concepts

web based languages like html, php are easy than the desktop based like java... so, first choose one wisely.

it's computer science in cholaiste dhulaigh , it has an entry route to DIT, but I was thinking of changing my mind to csl in trinity.

I'd recommend learning Java first and doing the Bucky Tutorials.

If you get stuck on anything you can ask me and I'll do my best to help or post over at the development forum.

You don't need to do anything to prepare for CS in Trinity, and I'm willing to bet it's the same with any CS course in the country. They assume you're starting from scratch.

If you do CSL in Trinity, you'll be doing almost exclusively Java, at least in your first year. Possibly a bit of Prolog, but that's all.

I've just finished second year and I know a lot of people struggled with the intro to programming (java) module as it moved quite quickly in the first semester. Having a heads start is a huge advantage.

In my experience people don't realise that you have to learn the stuff yourself. You can't just go to lectures and expect programming just to click

I completely agree. However in pure CS there were people who had programmed for years and people who had programmed for a bit and then some who were brand new to programming. I see no harm in doing a bit of programming before college starts. Bucky's tutorials are very easy and quick to do and I think it would be hugely beneficial

Absolutely. I had zero experience going into that course and even used those tutorials myself. There is no need to get grinds though

    Goot tutorials here http://thenewboston.org/list.php?cat=31

In a fetac course you will be learning the basics of programming that can be used in any language eg: loops, if, else, data types and functions
