Whats the new craic of not showing a complete tel number on the ad?..looks like 087 2xxxxxxx.
You then click on the 0872xxxxxxx and the complete / proper number reveals itself?

    It's for security.

If you notice on them you can't copy and past them either.

It prevents a load of automated calls or copy and paste style spam going out to the numbers advertised.

Noticed that - probably due to people with smartphones accidently clicking on them and then ringing?

I assume it also means you cant google the number anymore to see what else a lad is selling

A fella on the radio today said he put an ad on for an I phone on Saturday. First text he got was from Nigeria it was a scam wanting him to give email for PayPal so the buyer could send money for the phone. The texts were automated so the new system doesn't prevent that.

You can still google it, you just have to tap the numbers in by hand, instead of highlighting them.

But whats with the XXXXXX bit and the grief of having to scroll down to click it? What's wrong with just showing the image directly when it can't be copied as text.

It stops automated diallers and text facilities from ringing or texting unwanted to the seller.

    yes

but google won't show up other/or previous ads on DD

a lot of small time dealers posing as private,

a poor move by DD as far I'm concerned

It's certainly a nuisance for ordinary users, yet one line of code in a Google Chrome Extension currently defeats it (and I'm sure the spammers are no dumber than I). I imagine that the number needs to be present in text format for screen readers for the visually impaired

Even with the images, I'm sure someone determined enough to get the numbers would find a bit of code to convert (OCR) them. So what next - numbers in CAPTCHA format with squiggly lines etc?

I always googled the phone no to see if there were other ads from the same seller. It was handy but it looks like a lot of people are being scammed so they have to be seen to do something.

What about yourman on the radio I mentioned he got an automated email from Nigeria last Saturday? No need for phone number.

What type of search do you put in to google a number?
