I was wondering could someone help me out. I'm going to Thailand for 9 days in August (on the way home from Australia). We are spending three nights in Koh Samui and three nights in Phi Phi. What's the best way to book accommodation. I'm going with my girlfriend so we will be looking to stay in a nice hotel. My friend recommended waiting to book a place till your over there. He said to book a place while on the ferry to the island. Would people agree with this advice?

I've been looking up the normal hotel websites and see some lovely hotels for around 100euro a night, but people have told me that you shouldn't be spending more than 50 euro a night in Thailand.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

If you only have 9 days I'd book in advance, you don't really want to be looking for accommadtion when arriving ... Have a look on trip advisor that'll give you a good selection of what's available and sawdee.com is a good site aswell

I was in Samui in April and stayed at the lovely Amari Palm Reef. Booked online before I went as I was there for a wedding. If the prices suit you, I would recommend it. I've been to Thailand three times and it was probably one of the nicest I have stayed in. It is a lot more expensive than the hotels around, but you certainly won't feel ripped off. And it is within walking distance of the main area in Chaweng, where you can have cheap(er) drink and food.

I also stayed in a cheaper hotel in Samui in April, for three nights at the end of my holiday. Can get you the details of it if you like, it was about 200 yards from the Amari.

We stayed in Phi Phi Island Village Resort. It was priced by Western standards, but we felt was worth it as we were on honeymoon and had an amazing time there. If you want a bit of luxury and don't mind paying for it, I'd recommend it. If you want to go lower budget or maybe stay closer to the town then there's more central and less isolated hotels on the island.
We booked ahead of time as we wanted one of the more expensive villas and looked online for the best bargain. I'd say requesting something like that on the spot would've cost us a lot more.
If you're travelling in low season and have the time to shop around different hotel, then you may get a better deal.

im going in august, and were rarely staying anywhere longer than 3 nights. Only places we have booked accommodation so far are bangkok and phangan. after that, were hoping to book as we ock up to places. by all accounts, that should be more than fine.
