Honda Civic or Ford Mondeo

Trading in my 00 car - I only do c12000 miles a year in a family car.

Could get a Honda Civic for €7000 or a Ford Mondeo for €10000 - both 2007 and both c80000Km, both from established car dealerships.

    Any advice?

    Which Civic and which Mondeo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

€10k for a 6 year old Mondeo seems like big money to me, regardless of engine.

Sorry - as you can guess, I am one of these people who looks upon my car as a way of getting safely from A to B - nothing else!
Mondeo 1.6 Petrol and Civic 1.4 Petrol. Nothing zooped-up about them.
I haven't got the printed details to hand.

The Mondeo is horrendously overpriced in that case.

That Mondeo is seriously overpriced, here is one that is a year younger asking €8750:

The 1.4 Civic is pretty gutless. If you could stretch to the 1.8 it'd be more useful. Think 1.4 works great for smaller cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 585 ✭✭✭NobodyImportant

What sort of driving do you do? I have the 1.4 civic and its frugal, but very slow. The 1.8 has 140bhp (vs 80 in the 1.4) yet once you get over 40mph, its not that much thirstier than the 1.4. I was surprised when my dad used to average 48mpg in his 1.8 Civic (mainly M50 driving).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

As above, if you are going for a Civic the 1.8 is the way to go. A 2008 one is only €390 to tax as well. We sold a 2008 1.8 Civic for €8750 last month. The mileage was slightly above average @ 130,000km but even allowing for paying a bit extra for a lower mileage example you should be able to get one from a dealer with a warranty for under €10k.

I was thinking along the lines...2007/8 honda civic 1.8ses or 2007/8 ford mondeo titanium 2.0 petrol. Which do u think is the better car?

Best car of the year 2007: HONDA CIVIC SALOON
Best car of the year 2008: MONDEO TITANIUM X

Only do short journeys to and from work. Also the odd day trip down the country with the girlfriend at weekends in the summer....
Overall about 10,000km per year so a petrol is best suited as is a saloon, will be starting a family this year or the next :)

Budget of around 7k any opinions and suggestions?

Mondeo is in a different class to the Civic in every sense of the word. Finding a nice top spec 2 litre petrol one from 2008 onwards might be a challenge though.

    Actually this is on donedeal;

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/ford-mondeo-nt-zetec-2-0-5dr/6178044

Strange they don't say the mileage and I'd be looking carefully at the service history. Also I'd imagine they would take a lot less than the asking price.

You'll find it difficult to get decent mileage out of a big mondeo doing short commutes most of the year, unless you get your hands on an ecoboost model.

Having a family will ruin every other part of your economy too.

In fairness if you're doing 10k kms per year fuel economy is not and should not be a huge consideration. Is so then a 1 litre car or hybrid should be considered.

Hi OP the 2 cars you are looking at are as said above I would class them differently.

    Honda Civic - Ford Focus

    Honda Accord - Ford Mondeo

The way I have written above would be how I would compare size to similar and would you open yourself maybe to the likes of Skoda Octavia/Superb, Toyota Corolla/Avensis.

For a family and needing a big boot I would imagine I would be looking at the Mondeo,Accord,Superb,Avensis.

There are plenty more models to suit out there but if I were you and picking between what you have posted I would say the Mondeo which are nice a roomy.

Agreed but found one, pity it's all the way down in Cork..also a little over budget, even 7k is stretching it for me

For build quality I'd have the civic all day long over a Mondeo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 Ryukick

The civic saloon 1.8 has an i-vtec engine @ 140hp, not too sure about the mondeo.
That said mondeo is probably the nicer car in every way but the civic falls with in my price range.
Not in a hurry to buy as i have to shift my a3 sportback first... need a saloon because being a twin there is a 50% chance of having twins which would financially cripple me * fingers crossed* ha

Mother bought one lately (a weedy 1.4 but anyhow), it does feel like a "big" car, lots of space, solid safe car. Unless OP really needs the extra space the Mondeo provides I think he/she will more than get by with a Civic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 Ryukick

This is the 1.8ses civic I was thinking of. A lot cheaper which would leave me with the extra cash to insure and tax it for the year... still don't know

Did she get the saloon or the hatch? have a 2006 a3 and was hoping to go up a year or two

Has an 07 hatch 1.4. I'd say 80% of those sold here are/were that model!
A3 is a nice car, I don't know a fierce lot about them but I doubt an 07/08 1.4 Civic would be any advance on the A3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 Ryukick

    Yeah not a great difference road_high :)

Kinda want a mid sized family saloon, decent pull, reasonable boot and rear leg room. Must be smooth!

Corolla is an option I guess, just might feel a little too much like my dad.
Avensis is a little too big and I'm sorry Skoda has never appealed to me, bit ugly with big boot

Volvo S40 if perhaps you want something a little bit classy?
How do you find the A3 and why you want to change from those?

A3 are small but I would not mind having the s3

I'd say if you went to Cork and shoved €7k or maybe a little less under his nose he would bite your arm off. I know if I had the choice of that or a 1.8 civic I'd have the Mondeo every time.

The A3 sportback is very comfortable and smooth gears add to the comfort no end :) Changing because I would like more power and a little bigger boot.

I was told by my mechanic to stay away from volvo's...leave the swedes to furniture, only german or jap for me :D

No they are not a good buy. They are completely gutless and soul destroying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,528 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

They're not very likely to go wrong though.
I don't like that model Mondeo, but if you can live with the chronic lack of power, the 80s remnants in the interior and the sheer awkward size of it, then why not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,411 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Why not look at a petrol Accord, more a direct rival to the Mondeo than the Civic.

If you're worried about needing space for twins then you don't want a saloon. Mpv or estate for carrying baby gear and two buggies or a twin buggy. They're popular for a reason.

The Mondeo is a great car to drive, but it is huge! I'd have the Mondeo over the Civic every time, but definitely do not buy the 1.6 petrol. I drove a 2.0 TDCI this weekend and I wouldn't go for anything less powerful than that (that's fast enough but is nothing extraordinary), so in terms of the petrol engines, the Ecoboost or the regular 2.0 litre models would be the ones to go for. The Mondeo is very reliable once it's serviced on time, the last model Civic wasn't exactly Honda's finest hour on the reliability front, the saloon models should be decent, though.

Yes, but a Honda off-day in terms of reliability is still a long way ahead of Ford on a good day!!
He won't get a diesel Mondeo for anything like his budget, not a decent one anyway. The 1.6 Mondeo would make you cry it's so gutless, although if the A3 is a 1.6 then that's a terrible engine too. The 2 litre Mondeo couldn't really be recommended over a similarly priced petrol Accord.

Now I'm more confused than before I started, with 3 cars in the running.... Honda Civic 1.8ses saloon, Accord 2lt, Mondeo titanium x 2lt, all petrol.

What do u think of this http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/honda-accord-07-tax-01-14-nct-02-15/6023022

Would prefer a manual as I do a mix of back roads, small towns and sometimes M50. I,m off tomorrow so maybe best thing to do is to go round and test drive a few :D

Looks suspiciously cheap, I'd run every check possible if you are considering it.

If it is genuine then it is a lot of car for €6k

    Just a quick updates lads...

Went for a 2nd gen 2008 Mazda 6 executive se, multi function leather steering wheel, huge boot, comfortable and a bit of poke in it when needed... overall quite happy, but in the back of my mind still think about the Accord.
Maybe it will be my next a few years down the line...

Big thanks for all your suggestions and comments
