I have no idea where else to throw this thread. Hopefully the mods will sort that out but anyway.

I'm currently doing a report about contact centers, describing what they are and what the purpose of them are etc. However, I'm fairly stuck on one portion of the report that I need to do but I don't know what to write.

The portion is; "Skills Required to Work in a Call Center". I am not completely sure what to write in this part but if anyone could just give me a rough idea so that I could throw it into a paragraph nice and easy I would be grateful.

This is the only part I'm stuck on.

    Thanks in advance.

Skills Required to Work in a Call Center

Must not speak the language of the country that the call centre serves.

    That is all.

Was hoping for something a little more mature than that especially on Boards. This'll get me 25% of my marks if I do it right.

That's exactly what we're here for too. To do your homework.

Have you seen the program about one in Swansea on BBC3 at the moment?

Terrifying place, especially when the boss tries to set the employees up with dates/ speed dating nights.

I'm not asking anyone to do my homework for me considering I have 80% of the report done and I've been stuck on one part for hours. I haven't asked for any help until now but I'm pondering whether or not I regret bothering to come on here and ask. But thanks anyway...

Skills Required to Work in a Call Center

You must be able to use a phone, or at the least be able to pretend like you know how to use one.

Good communication skills. Ability to speak slowly and clearly (this took me a while when I started on tech support). Obviously a technical call center and customer service center skills would vary a lot. Technical call center you would obviously need a technical certification or at least general knowledge and logical thought process. Patience is also very important as some customers will need to be talked very slowly and clearly through even a simple issue.

    Oh and eh... big tits.

Well how far back do you want to take it? That would be one of the very first things you would need to be able to do but there are other skills you would need but are applicable to other areas of life too.

Such as being able to breath, eat, drink and poo. Without these skills you are screwed from the start so they might be good ones to start with.

It's not very hard to find out this information.

Step 1. Log onto the interweb
Step 2. Go to your favorite search engine website
Step 3. Search for Call center jobs
    Step 4. Look-up job description
Step 5. Focus in on Required Skills
Step 6. Get your finger out and think outside the box
Step 7. Have a nice day

    1. The ability to read from a prescripted dialogue and the inability to stray from it.

    2. No knowledge on the subject at hand.

    3. The inability to make a decision without having to refer to 'my superviser'

    4. Very poor English OR an obnoxious condescending tone of voice.

An important one is that fingers must not be too fat to dial. If they are, then you must supply your own dialing wand.

    - Patience
    - Problem Solving
    - Listening
    - Directing a call from start to end, to get the information you require to provide to the next team (if escalation is required), or understand the information the caller needs
    - Able to relate to the caller

Unfortunately, I've seen and worked with a lot of people who weren't able to handle that. There's slightly more to it than answering a phone.

Clockwise only, however. None of that fancy cowboy anti-clockwise.

You should also have a cheery voice, none of that dreary stuff.

I was actually trying to find information without filling up my bibliography with never-ending columns of references. I wanted to try and do it in my own words and Boards seemed like my only option to get that. I tried NOT to google what I was looking for.

To those who actually gave me a decent list of skills, I've used them and I managed to get my report done. Just awaiting the result now by the end of the week. Thanks to those people who actually gave me the answer I was looking for.

    Interesting

Make sure you let boards know how you get on.

Mujibar was trying to get a job in India.

The Personnel Manager said, "Mujibar, you have passed all the tests except one. Unless you pass it you cannot qualify for this job."

    Mujibar said, "I am ready."

The Manager said, "Make a sentence using the words Yellow, Pink and Green."

Mujibar thought for a few minutes and said, "Mister Manager, I am ready."

    The Manager said, "Go ahead."

Mujibar said, "The telephone goes green, green, green, and I pink it up, and say, 'Yellow, this is Mujibar.'"

Mujibar now works as a technician at a call center for computer problems.

Speak language of country being served, to good certifiable level.
    Posess basic computer skills.

Not bugger all else needed for that work.

Are you being paid for this?

No, I can't respond to that logic, its hurting my head.

It's a trick question, what contact centres are looking for in their employees is a distinct lack of skills. If they had skills they wouldn't be working in a call centre in the first place.

The last thing you want in your technical support centre is for your telephone operator to go off giving personal advice to customers that might work. There's a script and they have to stick to it, if they know the real answer they might be tempted to give it to the customer off script.
