    Hi,

Just saw big Phil use a wedge (unsiccessfully) on a green. Always thought you weren't allowed use anything other than a putter on a green.

Not that I intend doing it but if the situation arose where I couldn't putt to the hole because of the contours of the green could I, as an amateur, actually use a wedge? Would the greens officer shoot me???

    Ben

    Yes, you're allowed but...
Yes, the green keeper (officer?? :)) would and should shoot you

Ya you can do it. The green keepers at your club will be delighted :)

...on the green in play, yes, else you must drop off IIRC

    You can indeed.

I see it as bad form though - unless in one exception : a hole is hidden in the corner of a kidney or odd shaped green and the fairway/rough intrudes into your line. Fire away: the greenkeepers have only themselves to blame for any damage for putting it there.

I think they mean you can use it on your green but must drop if its on the wrong green.

I've seen him do this a few times, he done it at on the final day at Augusta (i think the 16th) a few years back too, IIRC it worked out a lot better that time.

Not exactly true, you can use any club but not anywhere you like.

Ground under repair can be forbidden if stated.

As mentioned already, wrong putting green:
    b. Relief

If a player’s ball lies on a wrong putting green, he must not play the ball as it lies. He must take relief, without penalty, as follows:

Protected areas, young trees etc where the club has enforced a local rule

well obviously, i meant anywhere in play or that you are not instructed to take a drop from.

It's golf, not all things are obvious.
OP wasn't aware about being allowed to use a wedge on the correct green.
So to say "any club anywhere" could lead others to draw the wrong conclusions.
    It's pedantic, it's golf

Ok, so you can use any club anywhere you're allowed to strike the ball?

Saw Karlsson do that to great effect a few years ago ... can't remember when or where but the green was impossibly undulating and he just chipped it over all the hills and rolls and stiffed it.

Few clubs where you might need it ... Doonbeg ... hole with bunker on the green - have seen guys chip over that ... if you're going to put a bunker on the green what do you expect? ... the European club have some mad green (not sure if it's the huge one) where you can be on the green but have absolutely no line to the hole ... I say 'chip away'.

Garcia during the Wells Fargo this year.

Don't think I've ever needed to do it myself, off such a tight lie you would want to have a lot of confidence in your wedge play, you could easily end up further away than you started.

Never seen an amateur do it. I would be in favour of local rules banning it if they did, it damages the course. Golf is difficult enough without having to putt through divots on the green.

Imagine hitting it to 15 feet on a par 5 only to arrive up and find you're in a divot!

Against the rules in the European putter only.

I don't know what the rules are in various clubs, but I can't imagine not getting thrown off any course for taking a nice big divot out of one of their greens.

If you use the bounce of the wedge the damage would be minimal!!

Specific local rule or just accepted etiquette?

why, if the course is designed where you can't have a normal putt on a proper green, without having to go off it to get the line right, then they should expect to get some divots, and they should be expected to repair those divots also !!

absolutely nothing wrong with it if required imo.
