looking at an 84 land rover original and matching numbers,UK reg but been in the country for 18 years has a permanent export cert for 1996 don't know if it was ever on the road here but needs extensive welding as stood in a field for the last 8 years.so its definitely going to be 30 by the time its done IF I buy it !!!!!!!! Now that depends on the vrt people will they just accept the 200 euro or are they gonna try fining me for late payment etc. Etc......also its gonna be the wrong colour as was painted and never changed on v5 is that gonna be a hiccup or a hurdle....as an aside any idea where zv numbers for cork will be by then ?,please don't anybody suggest anything about dodgy tax books chassis swaps etc. Cos the last thing I want is yet another RINGED Rover.

Thanks Max at least that will fit on the plate, year plate would be tempting to have it wear its age on its sleve ,but would probably have about a million numbers but again my big concern is would I potentially be liable for a late payment fine.

if you buy it you wont be liable for late payment, make sure you have a dated receipt.

The seller is not really entitled to sell the vehicle but that;s his Pidgeon...

Asked hypothetical questions to vrt man he want's 2% of the 200 euro per late day so............16x365x2 euro fine plus the 200. I haven't got the will to argue gonna keep looking for another.

Or buy it sign yourself a very recent receipt from the a man with an address in Northern Ireland where you just bought the car and you're good to go. How will they know where you bought it or how long it's in the republic? I presume there's still half a uk v5 with it.

He has the 'permanent export cert', it has the date of export typed on to it, I got caught that way. I had to pay up, not a thing I could do:(

I think its 0.2% of the €200 for every day its been in the country, so for 16 years the fine would be 2336 euros.

Re-reg / re-import to NI, then re-export to IRL. Piece of cake.

Ok, let's look up the VRT Manual Section 1, P24....
0.1% of the VRT charge for each of these days.
    (So unless they've increased the rate twenty-fold) Based on €200, that's 20c a day.

I'm gonna ring the vrt crowd in Waterford with my hypothetical questions it's almost as convvienient for me to go there anyway ,see if they'll give me a nicer wander, more along the lines of .1% would be good

If you hypothetically have Revenue acceptable evidence to support the date of your acquisition of the vehicle then they only really have the right to charge you from then.

If you can get the V5 (minus the permanent export cert, which is really only relevant to a UK owner who is moving aroad), then all you really need is a receipt dated at least 30 years older than the car.
This 'receipt' can be any scrap of paper....doesn't have to be a garage receipt or suchlike.
Once you are in 'vintage VRT' territory they aren't too concerned about you. They have bigger fish to fry.
Revenue will probably send the V5 back to Swansea, but I don't imagine that the DVLA will bother telling them that this car was 'permanently exported' in 1996....they are usually far too busy and will just throw the V5 into a drawer with all the other exported cars.
