Ground Sealing silage pit

Made bales the last couple of years but was thinking of making a pit (open clamp) this year.

Just wondering what do most people seal the ground with.

Used dung for years but haven't got any now , and also not allowed in REPS , also messy.

Filling fert bags with soil and they break after a couple of years - messy.

Know you can buy the long bags but they can be expensive.

Anybody use tyres on the ground or would they seal properly.

Or anybody have any other ideas ?

I have gravel bags but you could just use clean gravel along the ground for a perfect seal, I have also seen soil which was perfect aswell. dung was king but hard work especially forking off in the middle with wind and rain blowing .........

No when grass grows on it, you just peeled off scraws ;) Sometimes a sprinkle of grass seed helped. Handy enough.

We use a shovel or two of fine builders sand in fertiliser bags. excellent seal, but bags do tend to deteriorate from frost and UV and need rebagging every 2 years.

I think secure covers in combo with their pea gravel bags would be ultimate, a lot of headaches avoided sealing and opening benches when feeding out, but not the cheapest option.

We have 3 pits in sheds, along the walls and front we put 2 rows of tyres, never had much waste worth talking about
