Rules question... Played wrong ball...

... Yesterday I hit approach shot to green... Went into heavy rough beside green. Was playing brand new ball. Found what I thought was my ball in rough... Hit it onto green. Only then noticed it was not my ball. Same make and number. Only the ball I hit had a tiny logo on it that I did not notice in rough before I hit it. Went back to rough and found my ball within a few feet of where I hit the wrong ball... What's the story in this case. I marked myself 1 penalty stroke....

You should have played your ball as you then found it, and it's a 2 stroke penalty.

Thanks... Scratched the hole any way so did not make that much difference...

If you were in matchplay it's an automatic loss of hole also!

Not sure you can just scratch. Because you hit the wrong ball, and then did not go back to play the right ball - taking at least one hit at it - I think it is disqualification for the round rather than a scratch and the rest of the round still legal.

Since he said scratch I presume he's playing stableford which means you can choose not to finish a hole if you don't want to.

You are correct. He is not disqualified.

Note, though that some disqualification rules do apply to the full round and dont let you just scratch the hole that the violation was made on. Wrong ball is not one though. ie. you can choose not to finish a hole, but in some cases if you have breached a rule, the disqualification must be applied not just a blank.

There is a few alright, but rarely would you see or hear of someone being disqualified in stableford competitions.
If the OP had managed to salvage a point with his one shot penalty and signed for it, he would have been disqualified as he would have signed for a lower score than he actually had!
