Firstly to the mods can you please not merge this with the abortion thread as it is a somewhat different issue. I am not trying to get in to any type of a debate here as to whether or not suicide is correct or incorrect to be legislated for or without I have already read much into the debate and have already made up my mind on the matter.

Anyway I have just created a petition on change.org: <snip> and I really want not only Christians but also people who have the same state of mind as myself to sign it. I am only starting this now and hope to launch this via social media and word of mouth and would really appreciate people's signatures on the petition.

Many thanks and lets keep suicide out of the equation.

It's not quite clear the way this 'petition' is forwarded, or indeed to whom?

The petition is presented in a window that says, 'To....blah blah...fill in the name'

etc. but it doesn't give any information as to who one is 'petitioning' or even allow 'me' at least to enter information? Is it my browser? Is it the site? Am I doing something wrong by clicking in the box and not being presented with a choice of recipients?

It's not a good set up.

Okay, I see that you can sign in the left hand side and input your email address etc. and send your information - but it's not quite clear who exactly is receiving this 'petition' or indeed your contact details?

I think op it would be nice if you shared that information.

OP what are you trying to achieve? If a Irish women wants an on demand abortion its 35 mins away on a plane in the UK. Or available in a unsafe way at home with a dodgy pill brought online. Not allowing an abortion for suicide reasons is just going to stop the person who needs it. Why would a women want to be evaluated by a panel for an abortion when she can get a no questions asked one else where.

Most Irish people with the recent irish times poll agree with Government plans for abortion on limited grounds. I think its generally weird that a lot of catholics have strong views on abortion, even through in the bible Jesus talked about constant need to help the poor and the vulnerable. But I dont see catholics asking the government to help the sick and poor but rather focusing time on a petty issue like this

I think it's to the Members of Dáil Éireann as a whole.

You "sign" the petition by filling in your details in the column on the right and clicking the sign button.
There is a box where you can fill in "Why is this important to you? "

I'm just answering your queries by the way - I'm not recomending support for it.

I'm a bit curious as to why when the "Display my signature on Change.org" is clicked on by default, the first signatory is not prepared to identity themselves.

I just thought the lay out wasn't the best. Sorry! I don't think it's any harm to mention that it's not exactly clear as crystal.

Well I don't know about this, but of course you could wonder..lol..

I'm sorry OP, for being idiotic about your thread, and perhaps detracting, maybe it's perfectly clear :o

Total goof ball - I'm sorry.

i think you should probably change the title of your petition. "Persuade the government to ignore the constitution and their sworn duty" might be more accurate, in terms of what you are trying to achieve.

"Vote against the protection of life bill", good one
There've been two referenda already, setting up a petition is going against the constitution & will of the people

    MrP

The 8th amendment is very clear.

"The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right."

Of course if the life of the mother is at risk then the pregnancy has to be terminated, nobody in either side of the debate has any doubt about this.

The problem is when it comes to risk due to suicide, There are a range of treatments out there, abortion is not going to treat suicide inclinations.

Example:- in the Uk a woman on Medication for depression who was not depressed wanted to have a child. All went well for 4 months, until the mother stopped taking the medication because she was afraid it would harm the child, she became unstable and then wanted to have an abortion. If she was in her right mind she would not abort, had she had the abortion and then gone back on her medication she would have realized the terrible situation she was in and that she had killed her child.

Suicidal thoughts are temporary, having an abortion is not going to stop them. Infact abortion has been known to case suicides in women.

Also all the expects say you should never make drastic changes in your life if you are depressed.

I think the OP's objective is in the right place but given that petitions are only of relevance when it is to boost a government party own position to railroad something through - and the ironic aspect is that the government can blightily disregard ECHR rulings on other matters or not bother to implement constitutional imperatives if it does not suit their own cliquish supports base.

Sadly the Abortion legislation is a distraction by the government to the real issues. Women don't die in Ireland because we don't have abortion, that's the reality.

Hey OP! Forget the petition. What you really need is a bookface page. Collect a load of 'likes' and the world will change. We'll revert to the 1950's and everybody will be happy again.

    Where's Kony?!?!

Sorry OP, but we'd rather that people don't use Boards to promote petition campaigns, regardless of what it's for.
