I've decided I want to grow my hair to a length of about four inches.

    Like this:

Right I'd say it's around 1.5 inches long on top. Short at the sides. Here's a pic just out of shower.

Anyways, my hair is always going frizzy although it's not exactly curly. I'm conditioning now to try limit this.

I know it will likely take another two months until it's at the length I want. Unfortunately, I have REALLY thick hair. Barbers have actually commented about how thick my hair is.

This means as I let it grow longer it also gets poofier which I don't want. So my question is:

Is it possible to get hair thinned out without loosing much length?

Not having to go to a salon would be great too. I'm more of a €10 tops kind of guy.

    Advice?

Jizz off in your hand and apply rigorously every 6 hours.

Ah no, just let it grow man, the weight of it will pull it down. Anyway it might look deadly when it's grown.

I've tried that before though. It just gets way to bulky to manage. Wake up one morning and I decide - fcuk it - buuuuuuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz off she goes :(

Edit: Should mention I'm referring to the growing out of my hair. Not wiping a sackload through it.

have your €10 barber thin it out and layer it each time you get your hair cut.

    What's layering?

He often hacks away at it with a thinning shears. But I've read that can make my kind of hair even more afro-like because the smalled 'thinned out' hairs push up the long ones.

    Then comes regret.

Then six months of Garda crew cuts. Then we start anew, :p

I did grow it long before, but like the first pic you posted, it won't bounce like that would. It would be more rigid if you just let it grow.

i think the barber cuts your hair in sections with some parts longer than the other which can make short hair look longer.

I'd have similarly thick hair if not thicker. It's worth going to an expensive barber to start the style, and get your hair thinned out. As soon as you walk outside the door, take a photo of your hair, and bring it to your €10 barber in a few weeks. Then go back to your expensive barber in 2 months and get your hair exactly as you wanted again.

Find styling methods/products that work with your hair too. I find using herself's hairdryer works really well when my hair is thicker.

I've been growing my hair out for a while now. It's a little bit down past the bottom of my nose at the front and a bit longer towards the back. I'd recommend experimenting a bit with different shampoos and conditioners til you find what works for you. The likes of head and shoulders really dry my hair out and make it frizzy as hell so I'd say stay away from them! I tend to shampoo it every second or 3rd day but condition it everyday.

I also comb it at least once a day to stop it from tangling. As for styling products these days I only use a small amount of wax on the roots at the front to try get a bit of lift but my hair is pretty straight overall. Again have a mess around with different products til you find something you're happy with.

My boyfriend also has crazy-thick hair and wears it quite long. At times it is a bit wild! He has gone to a stylist a couple of times to get it cut into a good style, and then when he goes to the barber, he just gets them to keep the style but trim it back a bit.

Yes you can get your hair thinned, they have a special shears to do it and it's just a part of a normal haircut if you ask for it, they don't charge extra or anything. And it doesn't worsen the problem or cause it to stick up.
