    Hi all
I was installing Metac insulation between rafters today for the first time and i thought that it was a good insulator but i am slightly concerned about it from a health point of view as it seems the exact same as fiberglass and i dont think it is safe to be inhaling glass fibres when you need to access the attic space. Just wondering what other peoples thoughts are on this.Is Metac just another name for Fiberglass, although i know its conductivity is 0.034.Is Frametherm made from fiberglass too?

    in all seriousness....

Did you goggle metac insulation and find out what its made from?

it would actually be a much better thread of you found out what its made from and them posted your comments on using it..

In all seriousness..... i did Syd yes.Id says it on the packaging anyway that its made from recycled glass so i dont know how it much different to Fiberglass.I would put health and well being before Insulation conductivity.Anyone else got anything valuable to add?

Excuse me but you are saying you installed fibreglass without reading the manufacturers installation recommendations and NOW your looking for answers?

In your first post you didn't even know it was fibreglass...

Seriously... What more do you want?

Did you read what i said....Im not looking for installation instructions,im wondering if it is a healthy product to have in your attic since its made from glass fibre and is itchy and irritating, and i wouldnt have posted in the first place if i didnt know what it was made of.I have been in attics with fiberglass and it is not the healthiest place to be, so im just wondering is Metac any different, as harmful etc as traditional fiberglass.

    :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

well seeing as you KNEW all along that metac was fibreglass you seem to have answered your own question. so whats the point of this tread again??

so im just wondering is Metac any different, as harmful etc as traditional fiberglass.
and AGAIN, did you at all refer to the manufacturers recommendations on installation?? seeing as you DIDNT know metac was fibreglass, i highly doubt it.

Yes Syd i had my Nasa suit on.For the third time i am wondering peoples opinion on Metac and how healthy it is to have in attics that you access for storage, as you are inhaling it,cant be wearing a mask every time you go into attic hardly. But maybe Metac is an improvement on traditional fiberglass. Not looking for smart comments.Look forward to hearing from somebody with something valuable to say.

But you don't put health far enough ahead to bother reading up on the product before installing it? Or indeed purchasing it? What advice are you looking for?
Anyone else got anything valuable to add?

Research/seek advice on a product before you buy & install.

You're not having much luck on this tread Tobbslerone!

My two cents - I'd guess maybe 8 out of 10 new attic spaces with flat ceilings are insulated with either metac or another fibre glass product. If it wasn't safe for use, it wouldn't have got its agrement cert. It's certainly not asbestos. And really, how much time are you going to spend in your attic space? If you're worried about it, then do put on that mask whenever you're getting your Christmas decorations down.

I've been told that Metac permits a full joist fill (between plasterboard ceiling and Tyvek felting, whereas Rockwool would require an air gap between top of insulation and underside Tyvek. The latter is preferable as it compensates somewhat for less-than-perfect installation

Is this right and why is this, precisely?
