Following last week's monster effort from Shane Dowling I was wondering what is the proven record for long-distance points?

This one takes some beating, Ciarán McDonald in the 2004 Final, probably as good as it got that day....

Diarmuid O Sullivan got a huge one against Limerick about ten years ago. From between his own 21 and 45 after bouncing a few lads out of his way first :)

    Oops, thought you meant hurling

Can you score from a puck-out?

Well I did actually, considering hurling points are bound to be longer :)

Jamesy Kelleher allegedly did in the 1905 AI Final.

I wonder is Kevin Reilly goal today the longest range goal in a football match. He must have been at least 70 yards out

Anthony Nash got a pointed free against Tipp last year I think, not far from hes own goal.
At U21 grade Aidan Walsh deep inside Corks half back line, got a huge long distance point against Limerick in the Gaelic Grounds in 2011.
In minor in 2001 all ireland final against Galway John Gardiner got a huge pointed free from well inside hes own half.

    I scored a goal from a puck-out.

1981 New Ross CBS primary league.

I know Brendan Cummins scored a point from his own 21 against Antrim a few years ago, from a free. So, that's about 120 metres.

It happened in an underage match for my team and was allowed, but I wasn't sure if that was actually the rule or not. Someone told me that Aaron Murphy did in a club game too, but that could just be a rumour.

James Horan vs Kerry in the 1996 semi-final has to be up there.

Supposedly someone (think it was Stephen O' Keeffe) hit a wide from in the first round of the club championship, according to my reliable sources!

Be some asset if you could start to hit points regularly from puckouts. How would the opposition cope. Would wreck the game though!

If it ever got to the stage where it was being done regularly, down to the point the game was just a shoot-out between keepers, they'd surely ban it.

Still though, I used to wonder why Limerick didn't utilise someone like Albert Shanahan, who was a long-puck champion, to better use. Something like a short-puck out, get him into a bit of space as an extra man on the 21, see if he could keep it accurate? I think it'd be interesting.

Be hard to maneuver as it would become quite obvious what your doing, and they could still go man for man because someone else would have to take the puckouts. You've a lot more time and a lot less pressure when you can do as you please pucking a ball out as opposed to controlling a ball, looking up and then hitting it hard enough and accurately enough without being blocked.

Amazingly, Kevin Reilly has scored one other goal this season and it was against Roscommon in the league. That one was scored from just inside his own 45 so probably all of 100m out.

Rte are reporting a hurler stuck a 100m free today.

Fairly sure Ger Cunningham scored 2 or 3 in the same match playing for the All-Stars in New York once. Gaelic Park was short then, one of those pitches where the 65 metre lines intercrossed.
Remember Sean Silke scoring some monsters of frees for Galway in the 80s.
I would say if Aeron Murphy (Limerick's sub keeper) was pucking out with a strong wind he would give it a fair shot, even in Croke Park.
We had a few huge points a few years ago with that famous dodgy sliother that would bounce over the bar from 30 metres but its not used anymore.

Colm Coyle equaliser in '96 AI final. Was roughly on the half way line, ball hopped before it went over though :)

Been mentioned a lot this week, but I'd love to see Derek Duggans point from outside the 65 from all those years ago against Mayo. 68m out is the most oft quoted distance for it..against the wind I think aswell...anyone know if there's any footage out there? Maurice Fitz kicked some long ones for club and county, but Bryan Sheahan has even surpassed him in recent years in terms of free taking distance. For example...

That was the first one I thought of when I saw this thread, but could not find a clip of it.

Time seems to play tricks with my memory, I always thought the McDonald score I posted was from much nearer the 65'.

There was another point by Ja Fallon from under the old Hogan Stand in the '98 final which I could have sworn was from outside the '45 metre line but was actually about 10 yards further in:o

In hurling, I remember Tony Keady scoring from inside his own '65, that was the first time I had ever seen that and thought it was amazing

Clare's seanie McMahon scored a free in a county final about ten years ago , it was , give or take a couple of yards , on the sideline on his own 21 yard line , i dunno if footage is up on YouTube but it was on tg4 at the time , I think he used a 4 iron though :)

Adrian Power Ballyduff Upper and Waterford. A keeper who regularly scores 100m+ frees in club games. Serious slap of a ball

The rule is that the sliothar must hit something or someone, it cannot go directly over the bar, see Brendan Cummins hit the crossbar with a puckout in a club intermediate game about 10 years ago and I asked a ref after if it would have counted, he was able to quote the rule but I can't remember the number of it.

That's a great video, and great Radio Kerry commentary to add to it.
Love the way Weeshie tells us that Declan O' Sullivan is not 'subscribing' much to the game

Was only a young buck watching Mayo when I seen that Derek Duggan 65 yarder, it was an unbelievable thump into the teeth of a roaring wind........it was a thing of beauty. He must have been practising his frees with bags of turf in preseason.

Those two points from Ciaran McD against Kerry  when he caught the sweet spot.... pity about the end result of that match tho....
