Working during PDE

    Hi,

I will be applying for the PDE next year and I was wondering if anyone has worked while doing it?

When the PDE was a one year course I was able to afford it, however, as its not a two year course I will not have the funds to support myself for two years without some work.

I already have a part time job where I work Friday and Saturday nights (or any other nights I want) from 5pm to 2 am. It is the only way I can see myself being able to fund this. (Ill have my saving plus about 200 per week)

Has anyone else worked while doing it?

I did a load of grinds during mine and survived on those and subbing in the school (really depends on school - most don't know it would seem). I'd say you'll be fine working those hours. You can still get 8 hours sleep and have time the next day to do stuff and catch up on lesson plans.

Subbing won't be possible anymore for dip students with section 30 being inacted in November which I think is terrible for dip students as it was nice to get some money during TP.

Ridiculous that they are taking this from PDE students, cant get my head around it at all.
Do you know if it will be possible to sub up until November when it is enacted??

You have to see that PDE students are just students not qualified teachers. It's only fair.

It's not only fair Imo. why are student teachers given the responsibility to take class from September through June if they are not deemed capable to substitute? I don't see the difference. Fair enough if there was an exam year class that needed a sub teacher It could be argued student teachers should not take them but other than that I think it's ridiculous. Taking much needed money off a student teacher is all its doing. . .

Not when there's plenty of unemployed teachers that would kill(not literally :)) for those few hours subbing.

I think student teachers should be allowed to take the odd class for supervision that may arise on a day to day basis, but shouldn't be allowed to take classes on an ongoing basis to cover sick leave etc.

Qualified teachers should be given priority of course, if available - but the reality is that if a class needs to be covered last minute (and can't be covered by S&S) it is very unlikely schools are going to phone up sub teachers.

A kicker for me is also that in my school even more of these classes will now be covered by FETAC tutors who in many cases are even less qualified to teach them than the student teachers. (I realise this does not apply to all FETAC tutors, but it applies to most of them in my school) I don't think that's fair either.

I worked throughout my dip year...wouldn't have been able to afford to do it if I hadn't. I worked evenings and weekends and as my employer was flexible [and a retailer] I got full hours during midterm breaks, xmas and summer. It had no effect on my ability to do the course [which itself was a waste of time, apart from the actual teaching practice]. Don't assume you will be able to get grinds as parents want to be sure that the grinds tutor has a track record which you won't have if you are only starting out.

As regards 2 years - Its terrible for those who have to qualify by doing the two years. Was this another of Ruairí's great ideas? Does this mean you have to pay two years worth of fees or is it the same cost as before? As I said above, one year was a waste of time but to have to do two is a disgrace so I wouldn't put my life on hold while doing it. A bit of flexibility from an employer and you will be fine. I actually think they had a rule that you couldn't work when I was doing my dip but I can't remember exactly.

I worked some nights and did some other freelance work during mine and I would have done a better and more enjoyable Dip had I not been doing so. Just be wary of taking on too much work and make sure you are well organised.
