Number plate - screws in the metal

Hi all. Went to change my number plates today as the old ones were gone quite shabby. When I opened the number plate surround with the dealer logo on it and took out the number plate, I was shocked to see that whoever put the number plate surround on decided (like an idiot) to drill 2 screws straight into the metal of the car, as opposed to using the 2 very obvious screw anchor points already on the car. Thankfully there doesn't seem to be much rust after developing.

What I'd like is some advice on how I can repair this so rust doesn't set in. I'm going to get a new surround and put it on with the proper screw points, but would like to take care of this issue while I'm at it.

    Any suggestions appreciated!

on a previous car i sprayed them with wd40 to repel any water out of it, then wiped it clean and put a dab of underseal on them. probably not perfect but sure...

why spend money on a new surround, just throw out the old ones, I always take them off any car I buy.....why do people gve dealers free advertising with these and especially stickers in the window or even on the bodywork?

Getting a new blank one. They are handy in that you don't have to drill holes in the number plate, you just insert it in the surround...

Good strong double-sided padded tape is much neater and doesn't require any screws. Halfords have it if you don't have time to wait for an order from eBay, albeit at vastly increased price.

Why not use the same holes as the old plates?

Probably done that way as the dealer plate surround holes don't always line up with the manufacturer holes in the car.

99% of out plates are screwed directly in to the metal on the boot, through the plate, as our surrounds go on all different makes / models and the holes on the surround never line up with anything.

Most plates I've taken off (to stick our surrounds on) are done the same way. Never considered that they might rust.
