Repair on scratched to bumper

I have been given a quote to repair some minor scratches on the rear (side) bumper of my BMW for EUR745 (Including VAT).

    The breakdown is:

    Bumper trim EUR45
Paint and sundries (what ever that means) EUR120
and 10 hours labour at EUR50 per hour

The bumper trim is acceptable, the paint seems expensive but 10 hours labour seems excessive (there is no scratch more than 3 inches and no dents whatsoever).

I appreciate I am not a mechanic but 10 hours seems crazy? I have another quote which is a 1/4 of the price but the first guy is supposed to be better ? Any advice.

    Many thanks

Repainting is very labour heavy, there's more to it than just lashing a bit of paint on so that's where the bulk of the bill will be.

I appreciate that but 10 hours for less than 1/2 a bumper? I have since found a Dublin based crowd that quoting EUR160 plus VAT.

Are the cheaper crowd painting the entire bumper?

No but neither are the first crowd who are quoting EUR745. I have just seen a crowd in Dublin who are saying EUR250 plus VAT for a full bumper

That seems excessive. Carcraft.ie are showing 250 for a full bumper on their site. From what I've heard, they're a reputable place.

Are you seriously trying to justify €745 to repair and paint a bumper:eek:

OP the guy quoting €745 doesn't want the job for some reason.Aroung €250 would be the going rate unless the damage is a lot worse than you say.Shop around and see if you can get a recommendation for someone local to you.

Thanks! My thoughts exactly. Granted I'm no expert but 10 hours to respray a bumber is excessive. €120 for paint, for an area of a bumber is bordering on criminal! This why this country has gone to the dogs: everybody just cons their way through life.

Hahahaha. I got my whole car resprayed for less a couple of weeks ago. Granted, it was a mini :)

Can I ask who you used and much it cost? PM if you prefer. Thanks.

i know it wont take much paint to do a bumper, but €120 for paint and resources is the quote. paint from what i have seen can be between €80 - 120 a liter (granted you wont need a fraction of that for your job, but still). that price also includes consumables, such as filler, primer, lacquer, thinners and all the little bits and bobs you don't think of that add up like scotch pads, sandpaper, filters, etch etc.

10 hours is a fair estimate too. a graize on the bumper is what you are talking about?

i mean rub it down, fill it twice or three times to get it right, sand it, prime it, spray it ( a few times, sanding between coats) blending, lacquering, polishing. a good job takes time.

i done two patches of rust on my car the other week and it took 5-6 hours to do a very basic job.

his labour rate might be expensive, but i don't think he is too unrealistic regarding time.

I dont think a comparison between a diy at home job and a professional panel beater/spray painter is really a valid one.

There's no way they would spend the guts of ten hours for a bumper.

If this were the case these guys are pricing their work at about €20 p.h. which I doubt they are:pac:

Got my scruffed front bumper repaired today. Used this company based in Cork.

Brilliant job. My bumper was also out of place just next to the wheel arch (see before and after pics below). To put bumper back into place and repair the scruff, it cost €100. Called to my house too. Took 2.5 hrs. I'm delighted!

Michael Cronin is his name and is a very nice guy.
