    Hi all,

What car would you recommend for the following conditions:

    - Male, early 20s, 4 yr full license on named policy so max engine size 1.6
    - About 5k-7k mileage per year with about 2.5k-3k motorway driving
    - Reliable
    - Fuel efficient but good poke for motorway
    - Preferable saloon (buy would consider h/b)
    - Year: > 2008
    - Budget: Approx €10k
    - Would like a few extras & not a poverty spec car.

    Thanks all!

Skoda VRS diesel/petrol? Golf GTI/TDI 170? Lots of choice out there and lots of different toys available in both.

Just an example with that budget a proper engined BMW would be my choice

Would you pick up a brera for similar?
Much nice in my opinion, but not a saloon.

1.8 civic saloon ticks every box IMO, you'll get a lovely one for € 10k

@JcDubz4life, That is a lovely BMW but I'd say the tax and insurance cost would put of the OP. Insurance would be big given that he's a male in his early 20's and on a named policy. Great car for someone though!

    Buy yourself a Passat.

Thanks all for the suggestions so far however, as BobLeeSwagger pointed out insurance is a factor so the max engine size can only be around 1.6. Really loved the BMW too!

    The 159 estate is scrumptious.

lol. That 1.6 diesel engine in that car, lets be kind and say that it's pedestrian at best!

Lads the OP is in his twenties and does feck all mileage. What's the bloody attraction with Passat diesels? He will be in his forties soon enough and forced to drive something like that.

Hyundai I30, Kia Cee'd, or a Mazda 3 is what id recommend or if you can go above your 1.6 engine limit a Honda Civic saloon as has already been suggested.

If you do need to keep it under 1.6 consider the 1.5 Mitsubishi lancer also. Good value vs other motors in that range and I actually think they look very well

Just now I'm getting back to this, internet was down over the weekend. Never thought of the Lancer, looks pretty decent.

Whats a 1.4 petrol corolla (2010) like on the motorway are they fairly good? I like the look of them and the luna seems the best

like the previous generation auris they are a poor car imo and are not as well built as you would think being a Toyota. There are much better cars out there in the same class that do everything better.

That Alfa will be seriously underpowered with the 1.8 in such a heavy car. Ideally you'd want the diesel engine with 150bhp

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Irishcrx

Agreed 159 with 1.8 engine is underpowered. I'd go with the 1.9 JTD 150 BHP...

Or I''d go with the 156 JTS petrol 03 - 05 facelift model with the 1.8 or 2 litre engine, think they produce 165 BHP look great and drive better than the 159. All great suggestions...

But you did say max of 1.6 litre, is so options are a bit limited, you won't get much poke for that but again I'll recommend Alfa 156 1.6 litre , they produce 112 - 115 bhp which is more than most 1.6 out there and they look sporty inside and out.

    1.6 has 120bhp ;)
