How hard is it to register for VRT so that one could tax a vehicle commercially.

VAT? you can tax a vehicle commercially without being VAT registered, you'll need to make a declaration of commercial only use though i think

Every farmer in the country with a commercial jeep, carvan, crewcab etc have commercial tax and only a small number would be VAT registered.

Well it's vat number or heard number either work unless its changed recently. Farmers would have a heard number and are entitled to tax commerically. At the end of the day there is plenty of people taxing vehicles without either number just using there pps never. It will work in some tax office and it won't in others. If I was the op id be trying the pps number first.

But to answer your question op you would have to set up a business then register for vat seperatly. Send in vat returns every 2 month and then do up end of year accounts. You also face the risk of being audited. Alot of hassle to save a few hundredh euros in tax but that's just my opinion. Hope that helps op I think it's worth chancing the pps unless you planned on setting up a business anyway.

Rules changed again in the last week or so,

A herd number is now no longer acceptable.

You need form RF111a Goods Declaration signed by a Guard.

A letter dated in the last 6 months from:

Revenue stating your self employed and you'll be using the vehicle for work purpose only.

    OR

Letter from an employer stating you'll be using the vehicle for work purpose only.

    You should ask an accountant.

I didn't think a VAT number was all you needed, though. Wasn't there a tightening up a few years ago?
