I suppose we should start a thread for this, let's hope we can keep away from all the speculation that has infested the cadetship thread (particularly last year!)

Best of luck to all applying

I already applied. Good luck to everyone!

Is there anyone on here who went through the DE process when they last advertised in 2011? I'd be interested to hear how similar/different it is to the cadetship, or will the process differ slightly for experienced/low houred applicants?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 743 ✭✭✭LeftBase

I wish this had come a year later! :(

I'll catch them up in 2015 anyhow!

My advice to those applying with no TR is to be able to talk a little about the A320(you dont have to build one just know it's systems a little..enough that you can talk briefly about the main ones).
Know whatever aircraft you did your MEIR in inside and out and brush up on ATPL theory(AGK is a favorite for questions). If you dont know an answer say that...better to admit your stumped than BS.

Just going through the application now it mentions aircraft type and rating experience, it says fields marked with an asterisk are mandatory but I don't have an a320 type rating so should I just leave this blank or just put in the aircraft I did the ME test on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,984 ✭✭✭Stovepipe

Put in whatever you have a rating on. What experience you have determines how hard the sim check will be. If you are rated on the Airbus, you'll get an appropriately difficult and relevant check. If you have flown another commercial aircraft, you will receive a similar check but you will be shown the differences between your TR and the A320.If you have no commercial TR, then your sim check will focus on your ability to fly IR.

    regards

If you are a fATPL with no type rating but have the JOC done put that down somewhere if you can. Not everyone gets a JOC with their MCC so it may be a small feather in your cap.

Has anyone received an invitation to online assessments?! I heard that rumor from a friend who received such an e-mail...

got the email today. Looks like its 90 mins. Bricking it so i'm saving it for tomorrow!

Anybody done these online assessments? What do they consist of?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭Lustrum

I did the assessments there the other day. You'll see when you open it up there is numerical reasoning, spatial reasoning, verbal reasoning, measurement of competencies, complex control, memory test, and maybe one more (I can't remember, but I think there were 7 to do). All in it took a little under 90 mins to do them all. There's examples for you to try before every test, and you can try the examples as many times as you want. If you're following the Pprune thread aswell, you'll see that people seem to find the verbal, spatial and numerical the hardest. I'm not going to lie to you, I'd probably agree with them, they're not easy at all. As competition for this is going to be fierce, you won't mind that I'm not going to start telling everyone else exactly what's in them, as I didn't have that advantage either.

    Best of luck with them

Did them a few days ago, have to agree the spatial and verbal reasoning tests were pretty tricky, think I only got half way through on the verbal one. Not sure how I got on with numerical reasoning test, I managed to finish it but they could all be wrong for all I know :D

The last one involving the flying was nearly impossible using a laptop mouse pad!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭Lustrum

Has anyone heard anything from them yet? The original job posting said if you haven't heard within 4 weeks of the closing date (which is this Thursday) you can assume you were unsuccessful. However it seems from both talking to others that have applied and other online forums that there's been no contact yet for anyone.

Anyone on the inside care to share any snippets they might have?

Maybe ye were lucky guys.....they took on 40 new recruits out of 4000 applicants....started them in batches of 10 in training in Dublin, to be moved down to Shannon after 5 weeks. Kitted them out with suits/ shoes etc.....got their
hopes up....Some of them started last Friday.
An announcement on telly on Fri 9 pm news, about Aer Lingus cancelling the 40 jobs planned in Shannon, due to an issue with Union. If you googled this announcement, it said that the statement was 22 hours old. Yet these people had been checked into the hotel the previous day. They got some funny vibes on Friday from tutor etc...but nothing was said.
They heard it from relatives that had heard it on the RTE news. On saturday, they were told that they would be trained for the 5 weeks, and then they would see.
They came in today (Tuesday) and told them the show was over...pack your bags, hand in your uniforms. Adios..

Now, all these 40 people had given up full time jobs in a wide variety of professions...one girl had flown in from France.
This was her third trip. One for interview, one for medical, and then the 3rd to start training.
Now, all they are facing is the dole......It is scandalous that Aer Lingus would do this to people, without crossing the t.s and dotting the i.s with the union.......

Firstly, the SNN dispute doesn't effect pilots at all. Secondly, there isn't even a pilot base in Shannon, so why would the be sent to Shannon? Thirdly, if EI just paid almost 28k to type rate and base train those pilots, they're not just going to throw them out after training them like that and putting so much money into them. Also, if those people had their contracts signed, then they've a case and EI can't just throw them out.

I'm pretty sure the poster was mistaken and referring to cabin crew. No big deal.

Ah, oops, sorry, should have spotted that. Sounds awful, but I think my point still stands, if they had a contract, EI can't just turn around and decide to cancel it like that, there'd be uproar in the unions.

Either way I think this whole thing will be resolved smoothly, or solved at least, smoothly might be a subjective term...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 619 ✭✭✭OUTDOORLASS

Yep, I was referring to cabin crew. No contracts signed....it was all very up in the air before they started.....weird even.

Did they already have their contracts or were they going to receive them after successful completion of training? I'm not sure. Anyway, best leave this thread to what it is...

Yes, handled very smoothly....all told to go home today.......40 people in early to mid twenties....who all resigned from
full time jobs, to go to EI, now on trains/cars/buses home......to go to dole office tomorrow.....

Any body hear of people called up for direct entry pilot interviews? Did online exam in June, heard nothing since.
Hope they didn't forget about us

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭Lustrum

From what I've heard, people have been getting calls for interview for at least 3 weeks now, including calls going out today. I've also heard about a guy who interviewed a couple of weeks back was apparently offered a job this week. I've also heard that one guy made it to interview who is still doing his IR training.

But I've heard nothing from Aer Lingus themselves you can believe what you want!

Not sure if there's many on here that applied for this, but I see today a second agency is looking for contract f/os for the summer. It's very disappointing for those of us that have and no contact from AL for months and months, and seems that the criticisms of the lack of contact in how the cadetship was handled is falling on deaf ears.

No doubt the pilots are treated well, it's a pity the same courtesies aren't given to prospective or wannabe pilots

well, its game over on this application. "Unsuccessful this time"

Yeah got a PFO letter too.

15+ years of righthand seat isnt too attractive anyway!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,812 ✭✭✭ProfessorPlum

You won't spend anything like 15 years right seat in AL, unless you want to, or fail command checks.

Don't know where you're getting that from.

    Okay 10 years then.

Some guys that joined in 2007 upgraded in 2013, so that's 6 years - albeit with a base change.

Actually it was quicker than that if you had JAR25 jet time and got into the LGW base when it was set up. Twas different times back then. We won't be seeing it that quick again.

Looks like they were saving up their PFO letters. A mate of mine got his too. I got mine many years ago now. You're all in good company.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 985 ✭✭✭APM

    Okay 10 years then.

Did you do an interview or sim this time VP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,133 ✭✭✭View Profile

    Just interview and aptitude tests.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭KnotABother

Is Aer Lingus really that big a job anymore? Don't get me wrong I wouldn't turn them down but why are people so obsessed with getting in to Aer Lingus? Anybody I know who is in there or know's people in there say that they are very much open to leaving for pastures new.
One recent intake(last 2 years) I know dreams of flying an Emirates 777.
