Can employees be required to attend a health and safety course at their place of employment on a non-work day (ie Saturday or Sunday)?

Secondly, if employees attend a health and safety course on a non-work day, is the employer obliged (a) to pay them; and (b) to pay at overtime rates?

The safety act says that training is at the employers expense and during time off from the employees duties.

As to whether or not overtime is mandatory, I.e. working on Saturday etc, I expect that's in the contract of employment. As would be the overtime rates.

    Thanks for the reply, brightspark.

Can you clarify....while I understand that training is at the employer's expense (I take that to mean that the employer would pay the cost of any third party, eg a health and safety consultant or trainer), is the employer obliged to pay employees for their time?

Also (sorry for this) can you refer me to the specific part of the act?

    Muchly thanks.

    (b) employees receive, during time off from their work, where appropriate, and without loss of remuneration, adequate safety, health and welfare training, including, in particular, information and instructions relating to the specific task to be performed by the employee and the measures to be taken in an emergency,

It's also in the act that employees must attend any required safety training.

Out of curiousity is it manual handling, safe pass or some other specific training?

Not only employee face a lot of issues but the organization has to also face lot of issue from workplace accidents. They loss good will upcoming projects and no doubt that it will be difficult to recover it. So I totally relate to #brightspark I know some of workplace those provide time to safety in working days Mostly government now have made essential to give space to some safety trainer in workplace and most of red alert industry known as construction and oil and gas. According to an England times more than 350 people get die on every year from unwanted accidents in workplace and many time minor error does not resolved. Some organization such as SHEilds , IOSH known as great supporting for well safety counseling.
