On one hand good news, but I hoped for a smaller cap hit...

If it was at 8.5 it would be great, this way it's going to be very hard to resign dupuis, Cooke, Adams, iginla, morrow this year and even harder to get Kunitz ( I never liked that guy ) orpik, Sutter and nearly impossible to give letang the money he wants ( 7-8 mil. A year for 8 years )...

HUGE Cap hit (two years from now). This is one of those Catch-22 contracts. It's great if he stays healthy and they win as a team, but I see this more of a CAP hindrance than anything else. The Cap is going down this year (by $6mil). I am not sure how you justify this type of money (although he would get it elsewhere).

The other troubling issue with this deal is that it has a 'no movement' clause. I am not sure what they are thinking, because they tend to hamstring teams when things go bad. Just look at the Luongo situation in Vancouver. Redden in NYR. Gomez in Montreal. DiPietro in NYI.

I really think that this is going to help put an end to any chance that Pittsburgh had of becoming the 'dynasty' that they could have been.

everyone thinks that the cap will go up again after next year...

i really like what chicago did with kane and toews at 6.3mil/year and i do think that any team that wants to win year in year out will need to get hometown discounts from players they draft and sign for 6.5 - 7 mil/year at most...

now while the pens are really deep at D and could end up getting rid of Martin's 5mil/year deal geno and sid's contracts are gona eat up 30% of the cap which is way to much.

as a Pens fan i really don't know what to think...

in an ideal world Crosby should've signed for a 7.5mil/year cap hit and hope Malkin would do the same and Letang sign for 6.5mil/year = 21.5mil/year on the 3 of them while this way it's 8.7 + 9.5 = 18.2mil/year...

will not be surprised if one of these contracts will end up being bought out later on....

yeah, they're gonna have trouble convincing Letang to sign for anything less than 7. At the bare minimum he will consider himself a top 10 defenseman in the league and expect the rewards that go with it. Dan Boyle was the tenth highest paid D this year at $6.6mil
