    1. What is your budget? [€1000] - would rather pay less, but would consider more too, kind of looking to find the best price for what I want.

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Video editing, some light gaming. Potentially editing 2.5k and Raw video, but if it massively pushes the cost up I'd rather rent an edit suite for the limited amount I'll actually work with that kind of stuff. Will be working on DSLR video, using Adobe Creative Suite, and Magic Bullet Looks - which makes rendering very slow on current comp. Running an i7 laptop with 8gb Ram, no SSD, 1gb graphics at the moment. It's grand, but I'd rather a proper PC for intensive editing. I work with a lot of files/multiple projects at once - so a 2tb drive with maybe 250gigs of SSD would suit. Interested in RAID, heard it's good for high end editing, but know little about it, other than use for backup. Would be interested in it if it makes rendering/export faster.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No.

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

    5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

5a. If yes, what size do you need. 24"

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? N/A

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Keyboard, mouse, wireless card, CF/SD card reader

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No - unless it offers a huge leap in performance.

    8. How can you pay? Credit Card

    9. When are you purchasing? Not sure yet, end of Summer.

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? South Dublin - first build so likely to need a hand.

    Thanks!

will you be using the next version of premiere pro for the editing, or sticking with cs6? the new version will be a subscription model, but it will have features that could potentially save you money; such as support for hardware acceleration using cheaper amd cards and support for multiple graphics cards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

I'd say I'll get the subscription soon alright

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,857 ✭✭✭indough

actually i have just read that it only supports more than one graphics card for export, not rendering or effects or anything like that, so best to stick with one card i'd say. here is an article with a couple of links if you want to have a read. and here is a list of the cards that will support hardware acceleration in the new version.

someone else might spec you a build based on this as you may get better value for money with an entirely amd based build and i'm not overly familiar with their motherboards or cpus. i'm guessing that maybe basing it around something like an FX-8320 and a Radeon 7950 or 7870XT might fall within budget and be quite powerful. i would also suggest an ips monitor for more accurate colour reproduction

I'd say maybe even the Xeon E3-1230v2 would be ideal here, too sleepy to post a full build now though. Will put something up tommorrow unless one I can't better appears in the meantime :)

A bit over budget but the best I could do. Still a lot of video editing power there. You can and should overclock that processor as well. That cooler and board should take you to around 4.5ghz which would give a massive boost to performance.

You might have to get some sort of bracket to mount that 3.5inch card reader. Most new cases don't have external 3.5 inch bays anymore. Some cases come with a 3.5 inch converter for a 5.25 inch bay.

For an extra €60 you could go with an intel system. This xeon is basically the same as an i7 3770 running 100mhz slower and without an igp. It does not have an unlocked multiplier but it can still be overclocked to 4.1ghz pretty easily. The intel has the stronger single thread performance but the multithreaded gap isn't big between the 2 but still better on the intel.

Cheers for that, looks excellent. I assume the 2 1TB drives are the RAID backup?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

No problem and yes. You could go to 2 x 2tb for an extra €60 if you need the storage.

If you want a bit more graphics power for games you could go with the 660gtx.

Hope it's ok to bump this.

I put off getting the new computer for a while to pick up some other stuff, but getting it this week so I'm wondering if I can do a bit better now than last year in terms of parts and price.

Was thinking of doing a build on pcspecialist with this setup:

Case: COOLERMASTER ELITE 311 BLUE CASE
Processor (CPU): AMD FX-8350 Eight Core CPU (4.00GHz/8MB CACHE/AM3+)
    Motherboard: ASUS® M5A78L-M/USB3 (M-ATX, DDR3, USB 3.0, 3Gb/s)
    Memory (RAM): 16GB KINGSTON DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card: 2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 650Ti BOOST- 2 x DVI, HDMI, - 3D Vision Ready
    Memory - 1st Hard Disk: 2TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 64MB CACHE
    2nd Hard Disk: 2TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 64MB CACHE
    3rd Hard Disk: 120GB KINGSTON V300 SSD, SATA 6 Gb (450MB/R, 450MB/W)
RAID: RAID 1 (MIRRORED VOLUME - 2 x same size & model HDD / SSD)
    1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive: 24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM
Memory Card Reader: INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (XD, MS, CF, SD, etc) + 1 x USB 2.0 PORT
Power Supply: CORSAIR 550W VS SERIES™ VS-550 POWER SUPPLY
Processor Cooling: STANDARD AMD CPU COOLER
Sound Card: ONBOARD 8 CHANNEL (7.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
    Wireless/Wired Networking: WIRELESS 802.11N 150Mbps PCI-E CARD (Special Offer)
    USB Options: MIN. 2 x USB 3.0 & 4 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL + MIN. 2 FRONT
Modem: NONE, I WILL BE USING BROADBAND
Power Cable: 1 x 2 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Operating System: NO OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIRED

Could I do better than that - comes out at €1035? Max budget is around the same, could stretch to €1,100 but I'd rather not! I'd be willing to build it myself if it was a good bit cheaper, but the convenience of not building it is pretty appealing, I'm not the best at that sort of thing. High likelihood of fire.

Same use as before applies - video and audio editing, and some gaming, but not a huge amount and I'm not fussy about amazing graphics, just running skyrim really! Monitor, OS, software and keyboard/mouse, are all sorted too.

    Cheers!

You can get HWVS to assemble it for you. Shipping from Germany is the only danger. Still it's a much better pc for the money.

If you use www.geizhals.de you should be able to save around €100 on the price below. Price includes assembly and shipping. Add 3 x sata cables.

    Thanks, much appreciated.

Does that Geizhals site just give a lower price on HWVS by going through their links?

Presume I'd need to pick up an Irish plug as well?

Yes just use their discounted hwvs links to add the items to your basket.

You can buy the psu on amazon if you want one with a 3 pin plug or else you can pick them up the cable in hardware stores or just use a convertor.

Cheers again for the help. I ordered the exact build you recommended.

I decided after paying I'd actually like to give assembling it a go myself, shot HWVS an email asking if they could not assemble it. I may have lost the run of myself :pac: But kind of looking forward to putting the thing together.

The computer arrived yesterday and it's all running well, except the wireless card. Can't get better than around 3 mb/s on a 20mb connection. I've tried a laptop and tablet in the same room and spot and I'm getting # 14/15mb/s.

Any ideas what I can do? It's been driving me mad trying to figure it out.

If you are in the same room as the router try run a cable to it as it's much better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

    Not an option unfortunately.

    Not an option unfortunately.

    Home plugs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

Thinking about it alright, but I'm convinced the wifi card has an issue, since anything else I use in the same spot is fine. I'd rather just get another card if necessary, or at least sort this one out!

If I do end up getting the plugs - are these a decent option? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-Powerline-Nano-500-Set/dp/B006O5S6LA/ref=pd_sim_sbs_computers_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1MWYVQAQAM6MZPSQ284P

Never used home plugs before but they look good. Do you have a warranty on the WiFi card and if not it would probably be cheaper for a new one.
Edit: it is a 20mb connection so you could probably get cheaper home plugs then them ones on Amazon.

I think I figured it out, for some reason it was set to TKIP and not AES encryption. Seems to be grand now.

Still not amazing speed wise though so I may still go for the homeplugs, cheers for the tips!
