The best advice I can give is to not worry about it until september and enjoy your summer, you'll be happy you did.

And if you're a TSM be prepared for the extreme uphill battle you have ahead of you since only 2 of us passed last year :P

I didn't get Schols but the first paper and second paper are based on the first term of second year so you can't study those anyway until you start those classes!

The first exam is analysis - of real varaible and complex.
Second paper is Equations of Mathematical Physics and then a choice between Stats and Mechanics, depending on which one you choose for second year.

The third paper is the one based more on first year - I still wouldn't suggest studying over the summer, it can be done by studying through term instead, enjoy your summer.

    Section A:
    • Linear Algebra 1 (1 question)
    • Introduction to Group Theory (2 q's)
    • Rings, Fields, Modules (1 q)
    • Metric Spaces (2 q's)
Section B and C depend on if you are Maths or TSM.

This is the one you can do some work for but again a lot of it is second year.

You can look at past papers for studying - the analysis courses will ask a lot of theorems. You will notice some of the same ones appearing every couple of years.

The people setting these exams are the lecturers who are teaching them next year even if you didn't have them this year.

Don't know if that is any help :)

You might have more luck on the Maths/TP Thread here

Forget about it till September. Nothing you can do before then will help you.

    Thanks for the replies!

Europeanson, seeing as you got the scholarship, what advice would you give? I take it that you yourself left the study until September then?

Would you not agree that it would depend from person to person on when to start studying, as it may take some people longer than others to become confident in the material?

Not really. The main issue is that you won't be able to keep up study consistently for that long, and all you can study at the moment are first year courses. Better to save your reserves of stamina for when you can do more productive study. The exams aren't for seven months, remember.

Attempting to do the second year stuff now would be utterly pointless, I think. Its much easier to study a course when you've had lectures in it, and homeworks to do etc. You'd be putting in a lot of work for very little return.

    Fair enough, that makes sense.

But what advice would you give? Congrats btw, I'd say it feels great!

Just something to point out is that Frolov (advanced mechanics lecturer) is going on sabbatical next year. I'm wondering what this will mean for the schols paper since (as EuropeanSon and Ride-the-spiral know) he sets an almost identical paper each year.

    Thanks, yeah, it's pretty good.

As for advice- make sure you do the Michaelmas courses really well. Reread your notes until you understand lectures as well as you can, do all your homeworks, and if you have questions, actually bring them to your lecturers instead of just letting them be as you might normally.

For paper three, learn all the definitions and iff statements as well as examples, as these types of things are most useful (as it's a problem based paper).

Regarding mechanics, if it's true Frolov won't be there, then make sure you ask the new lecturer about what he'll do for schols.

Any idea who will be teaching mechanics then? I find the idea of not-Frolov teaching it strange.

I'd say Tristan McLoughlin will probably do it

That's possible, but if he's teaching CFT/CED that's a fairly hefty schedule. There is another (I think also permanent) TP lecturer starting in September, so could be them either!

Any other news on what lecturers are possibly coming/going? A few of my decisions are dependent on whos lecturing the courses =P

Are you going into Second year? Don't you only have to choose two from Mechanics/Stats or number theory?

Timoney is meant potentially going on a half year sabbatical.

Number theory I think is Masha or Vlad. Vlad will be around for the whole year. Not sure what other changes will be made.

Unfortunately, from what I heard from one of the lecturers, they don't have the whole who's teaching what bit fully sorted out yet.

And (iirc you're a third year :D), I'd say that for a lot of the courses, it'll be the same lecturers as usual taking them. There's very few new courses. What were you trying to choose between? :)

3rd year TSM. Main debate is ODEs vs. Number Theory for Hilary as they're the second year modules I didnt do that I sort of want to. If Vlads taking Number Theory I want to do it basically :P.

Yeah Number Theory is really interesting and some of the stuff discussed is great! There is a lot of discussion on Prime Numbers.

I would swear by ODEs though - its really useful especially if you are considering PDEs at all! It was taught by Pete when I did it and by Petronela Radu last year but she was only in Trinity for a year!

    Going for ODEs so! Cheers!

Well you should look at the websites for information about them and the past exam papers! They would help!

Nice thread, wish i studied earlier now

Anybody know a clever way i can resit schols in js or if they will ever change the rules back?

Unless you have a really good reason for not getting them last year I don't think so, they are trying to be a lot stricter about that because a lot of people were getting them in third year and getting nearly all of the postgraduate study for free and Trinity weren't making any money - this among other reasons!
