    When changing oil,fuel and air filters should you buy the genuine ones that the main dealer stocks or are the ones that you get in the local auto factor shop ok.Is there that much of a difference,when you factor in the price diffence

    Oil filters, definitely go OEM, the price difference is peanuts. There can be a larger difference with air and fuel filters, but still not massive money assuming its a regular enough car.
    For peace of mind and guaranteed quality, i'd go OEM or OEM manufacturer.

    PS, your motor factors should be able to get genuine parts too, or at least the same manufacturer.

    It all depends on what type of car you are driving and what engine is in it.

    My old man is so miserable he'd try and fix a broken paper clip. But he always uses OEM filters on cars. I think the quality of spurious filters has improved a lot since he started working on cars though, as a few of the brand forums I check out recommend certain spurious ones and when I was getting my bike filter the dealership used spurious ones.

    The real issue with cheap oil filters on some cars is that they need a non-return valve to prevent the filter draining when the engine's stopped. This is the case on filters that mount sideways - Peugeots, old OHV Fords, many others I'm sure. A very cheap filter without the non return valve will potentially cause issues with oil starvation on startup and kill the engine very quickly.

    On others like VWs (the older ones at least) the filter cannot drain when the engine is stopped because of the way it is mounted and the lack of a non-return valve doesn't matter.

    Cant go wrong with Mann filters my supplier said he has yet to see a faulty/failed filter return

    For me Mann, Bosch or main dealer parts, in that order. Wouldn't touch anything else.

    oil filters always go OEM from the dealer it can in extreme cases generic filters cause oil starvation for a few seconds and feck up the engine ,
    anything else (air / pollen etc) the likes of mann or meyle and you cant go wrong

    I go genuine on the diesel filters and the engine oil as well, especially if its a common railer with a DPF... ;)

    As long as you stick to the OEM suppliers you will be fine. VW filters are supplied by a number of different companies, including:

    Mann
    Mahle
    Hengst
    Purflux
    UFI

    So any of those should be fine. But if you are in doubt then the OE parts won't cost a whole lot extra anyway so may be worth getting for peace of mind.

    I remember this interesting post from Nissan Doctor, http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=83032264 ,

    The final part of the fuel system, a new fuel filter. For this I used a genuine Renault/Mahle filter as Renault specify their genuine filters to filter as low as 2 microns, where as other manufacturers and the aftermarket are generally 4-5 microns(even the aftermarket Mahle filters).

    I think my info in the post in that thread was a little out of date as seemingly 2 microns is the standard in the aftermarket now too, at least among the OEM brands.
