    Hi All,

I own a 1985 MF 690 2wd, 10,000 hrs on the clock. HAs done a bit of work but for the past two years its only been doing light work, moving bales, pulling trailers of turf etc. It has never failed to start, even in the cold weather, it might take a few minutes of heating adn turning over a few times but starts.
Last weekend, tractor was running for an hour, I turned it off and it would not restart about 15 - 20 minutes later. ENgine turning perfect but no fire, not even a cough, I kept turning for about 10 sevonds and nothing. I thought it was out of diesel, it took about 2 gallons and it overflowed. I pumped the lift pump a few times adn then kept turning it over and after about 30 seconds it roared into life. The same thing happened the following day, I just kept turning it over for about 30 seconds and it roared into life. I havent driven it since as I didnt need it.

Problem 2, the second time the tractor wouldnt fire was in the bog. Its about a 45 min drive away on level ground, I was pulling a full 10 X 8 box load, when I got home I noticed the clutch wouldnt come all the way up, still changing gear ok and driving in forward and reverse. But the clutch would bite, tractor moves away, but clutch not coming all the way up and I pulled it up with my toe. The clutch was not slipping.

    Any ideas.

Hi there, your first problem sounds like a sticking "fuel cut off " in the pump. Next time it happens, before you spin it for ages, gently tap the top of the injector pump with something like a 13mm spanner. Then see if it starts. Pity you have the tank full of fuel, if you only had a couple of gallons in it, a bottle of "fuel injection cleaner" could relieve the problem. Otherwise, time to get the pump cleaned/overhauled by a specialist.

Clutch, I have no idea about.

Had a neighbour with a problem like this. A lot of mechanics looked at it before one of them realised there was a small pin hole leak in one of the diesel lines. Diesel going out, air coming in and air-locking it.

have you checked the diesel, tank, fuel lines and the filter for dirt/water. if there is dirt in teh diesel tank it'll frow into the pump and cause small blokages.

clutch, check the spring on the clutch and grerase the pivot jionts they may be sticking espically if you only use it intermittenly.

Check the lift pump. Diaphram may be bad and not holding diesel. Replace fuel filter as well and blow the fuel line to the tank in case you have crap attatched to the tank pipe feeding the lift pump.

Clutch wise check for return spring on pedal, may be broken.

Hi all thanks for the excellent replies, it's gr8 to get info and not be worries that I've a serious issue.
The diesel filter is less than a year old and there is no obvious diesel leaks and the bowl is crystal clear
. Also I don't have a diesel tank at home, I have 3 five gallon drums as I pass d garage every day, I just keep the drums full so I always have clean fresh diesel,
The tractor will pull a load no trouble at full throttle so no problem delivering fuel,
I'm thinking I agree with iverjohnston it sounds like a pump issue, that's not a serious issue so ill get that fixed
The clutch is a little more puzzling, same thing yesterday getting the yard ready for silage, after a while the clutch not coming up all d way but no issue changing gears etc,
I putting a loader in the tractor ( quicky power loader, I know madness putting a loader on a 2 we tractor on a rough Kerry place but I've been talking bout it for years ) so might just leave it to the mechanic
Might get to it in d next few weeks,
