hey. im buying a car for my friend over the weekend up the north. it's his first car so has no insurance at the moment. i told him i would go up with him and drive it home for him. i plan on putting temporary insurance on the car for the day to drive it home. i was just wondering will there be any issues with this with the insurance company (liberty) as its on northern plates and such? any help is very much appreciated.

As long as it's not more than 20 years old you shouldn't have a problem. They may (or may not) charge you an admin fee. Just tell them you want a temporary transfer onto xxx 5555 and let them ask you if it is you buying the car.

This is assuming that you are insured on something run of the mill and that your friend is not buying a Mitsubishi Evo :)

There'll be no problem getting insurance with Liberty and Northern plates.

But be careful - get the car VRT'd ASAP!!! By law, Liberty will inform Revenue if the car doesn't have Irish plates within 44 days.

Ah no its only an Opel Vectra. I'll be driving it straight to his place and he will paying the VRT the following day. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

If your mate is buying the car, I cannot see your insurance covering you for anymore than 3rd party claims (excluding car damage) as you don't have an insurable interest in the car itself. This might be enough for you but you should think about it in case anything happens. To be frank, other than the distance between the garage and the border, it's not much different to a third party extension on your own policy (which you may have cover for already).
