Guys....had an intermittent problem that has gradually increased and got worse this past week.

When driving the car will suddenly start revving as if you were revving it in neutral.

I have to stop....foot on brake and take off again.

Took it to a guy who loaded the computer with updated software saying that might do the trick.

He said if that didn't work then I would need a new transmission.

Thing is I have not got any of the other classic gearbox warnings like shuddering taking off etc.

A friend seems to think I need a second opinion before shelling out 3k+

    Not sure what to do.

I'd say get it in to Audi or a trusted independent for a full scan ASAP before you go any further.

Thanks Kaiser....is it just me or does it seem like every post like mine ends up with the phrase "..and they told me I needed a new Gearbox for €€€€k".

I wouldn't panic yet but I would recommend getting it looked at sooner rather than later. I'd also try not to drive it if that's possible - especially if it's getting worse.

When was it last serviced? How many miles on the clock?

is the car smokey at all ? it may not be the gearbox

Thanks lads....it was serviced maybe 2k miles ago and it is just coming up to 100k on the clock.

Not real smokey....people telling me it could be a sensor and the guy who updated the software said the update wasn't telling him exactly what it was fixing etc.

Going to a guy in the morning who specialises in VW and Audi so we shall see what he says.

This evening all the lights lit up P D N etc.

I will probably have to drive it to the guy for him to look at it.....20 minutes away.

It could be the way you're describing it, but letting "some guy" at the innards of the car to install updates that he's not sure about what they do seems risky to me!

Whereabouts are you located? There's very well respected VW/Audi specialist that posts here who's based in Portlaoise - used him myself several times - if that's any use?

The first thing to do is get the OBD-II fault codes read. There are two hundred of them - P0700 to P0899 - that are there to indicate all sorts of transmission and transmission control problems. Your problem could be a sensor or a solenoid, costing one hundredth of what a new 'box would.

On the way right now to see him.

Kaiser...I am actually in Offaly and about 45 minutes from Portlaoise.
If you wouldn't mind PMing me his name anyway and if I don't get answers from this guy I will surely give your guy a shout.

Jim...PCs I know something about but Cars...arrrgghhhh....I have printed out your suggestion and will bring it with me.

Thanks very much for that lads...I will let you know what happens.
