Receiving payment via Paypal - fraud possibilities

I'm selling an item via a reputable online/magazine site.
I have been contacted via e-mail by a possible purchaser who is willing to buy at the full asking price, without seeing the goods, and wishes to pay via Paypal.
He has emailed me personally and I've pointed out that there will be extra charges ( 3.4 %, I think ) incrued by using this method, he seems fine with this, and says he is buying for a relative who is abroad.
If I get Paypal to invoice him am I leaving myself open to some possible scam ?

PayPal don't invoice him, you do. You can "request money" from your PayPal account. Check the fees (both for accepting payment, and for transferring out to a bank account, if you want to), and make sure the item you're selling is allowed by PayPal.

As long as you both are happy, then, you can receive the money (it's instant), and use recorded delivery (assuming it's a physical product).

The most common scam is that the buyer claims s/he never received the product, and opens a dispute with PayPal. You'll have a chance to reply/defend yourself, but you'll need to have some proof. So, make sure to use signed/recorded delivery (courier, even, if it's practical), and make sure to have it adequately insured.

Other than that, it should be all low-risk.

Thanks very much for your help lads,
the guy originally asked me for my paypal account details which naturally has me on guard, and also is buying the goods without inspecting, I will have to tread carefully.

The only info you need from the buyer is his email address . -- Then go to Paypal - Request money - create an invoice - and send this to email address .

Never log-in to Paypal from an email link .

Buyer may just want to pay using Paypal , because he knows he is protected . - So ensure you are protected too , so make sure you sell him goods exactly as described and ensure you can confirm delivery .

It could be a scam, my worry would be if you post the item not to the Paypal verified address if there's any dispute they might go with the buyer, also make sure you post register with tracking number.

    How much is the item?

Scam. No-one buys without some check on the goods.

people do it everyday on Ebay

Only ship to Paypal Confirmed address, when the cash is in, Paypal will tell you its ok to Ship, then withdraw cash and send item...

    You are covered by Paypal

As pointed out....I would be concerned abotu this I am buying for a relative in XXX

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

until the point that paypal discover that the account the money is sent from has been compromised, at which point they will be back on to the seller for the money back.
