Cut tongue

Hi, I cracked my top back molar a few months ago, got a metal band put around it to see if it would hold, the brace seemed to be cutting my tongue at the side every few weeks, I'd go back to the dentist and get it filled down. Anyway long story short changed dentists and new dentist advised taking the tooth out as it was past saving. That was a couple of weeks ago, my tongue is still getting cut.

Any ideas what it could be? I'm not chewing it, it more a slit, but it gets more and more painful. Or could I be clamping it in my sleep and it's getting cut? It sometimes heals for a day then back to square one. Am reluctant to go back to dentist if it's just my mouth adjusting to a missing tooth. Thanks!
