‘All the shame of the era is being dumped on the religious orders.”. Yet way more people were incarcerated in mental hospitals. Ireland put more people into mental hospitals than any other country in the world even than the Soviet Union. The number of psychiatric beds per 100,000 people in 1955 were as follows Ireland 710; Soviet Union 617; United States 511; Northern Ireland 440.

The dodgy thing about it is that patients didn’t need to see a psychiatrist to be admitted. Their family/people around them could just drop them in to the mental hospital and then they could not leave. In Ballinasloe the mental hospital incarcerated thousands. The Mental Hospital in Ennis was on a 60 acre site yet the town itself is nearly on a smaller site than this.
Isn’t it time for an explanation/apology from the Government?

The current government weren't responsible for that.
These things are usually a grab for compensation.

Psychiatric hospital is the preferred term by people who have psychiatric illnesses

the figures are terrible but if their families/friends were the ones signing them it, shouldn't it be them offering the apologies and not the state?

Yeah get a priest / doctor to sign the form you took over the farm from your elderly relatives.

More often than not this "mechanism" was used to get rid of an awkwardly-positioned sibling, usually a sister. Those places were full of girls with absolutely nothing wrong with them, incarcerated on a whim.

People basically being locked up so their family could get the farm. Or families locking someone up out of social embarassement.

You can blame the state but you can blame the people of Ireland too.
