    Hi there,

I have some Hi8 tapes that I want to save on my Mac. I do have the Sony camcorder and can play the tapes. They are old, but feel they are really important....like me!!
I want to transfer them onto the mac, and then burn them onto a dvd - I know they are analogue and need to be converted to digital, but how can I do this? The Sony camcorder has no usb port, only the 3 av points.

Apologies in advance for sounding so clueless, but this is all new. Would I be better just buying a dvd recorder? (Taking into account my lack of knowledge:()

    Any help appreciated...thanks guys.

I recently bought this which enables you to input analogue into the mac via the mac USB port. You plug the three cables for video and audio into the dongle, plug the dongle into the macs USB port and use the downloaded software to capture on the mac. Maybe that's what you're looking for?

    Gordon...thanks a million!

I did look on amazon, but was boggled by the amount of products on offer - Brilliant!
Just a quick question - (am sure as dumb as the first), but to burn a dvd on the mac, do I buy dvd-r?
Apologies again - am new to Mac and am feeling my age!!
    Thanks again!

I think so, although I don't think -r or +r matter these days with Mac. If you post your make and model of Mac, someone here may be able to confirm. Have you ever tried burning a DVD on the mac yet?

Just let me know if you want me to confirm what exact type of video it saves to and I can do a test output.

Thanks Gordon...still in dark ages here.
I haven't burned dvd yet - only photos to cd.

It's a 27" mac bought in 2011 - am sure this is of little or no help.

    Thanks for your patience!

Just to say...order placed on amazon. Thanks Gordon for your input (am sure I would have ordered the wrong thing, lost receipt etc)

Am so happy - lots of grandparents on video and hate to lose those memories>

    Thanks again!

To determine whether your Mac supports DVD +R, -R, etc. simply click on the Apple icon (top left) and select "About This Mac".
    Then "More Info".
    Then "Disc Burning".

Having established what formats your Mac handles, choose the one that your PLAYER also handles.

Hi all - just small update, got from amazon (tried to buy locally, but no joy), amazingly easy to install and work. Have all hi8 stuff on computers and DVDs. Just a 'go for it' for all those videos in behind the telly!!
