Hairdressing

I'm 20 and have literally only a days experience in hairdressing and I just can't seem to find an apprenticeship anywhere, it's literally the only thing i want to do, I have a qualification in Holistic Massage, A&P, Professional Conduct & Business Awareness and Hot Stone Massage, I have my ECDL and bar experience, I work in a bar at the moment, I don't have a junior cert and nowhere will take me into a further education college doing my city and guilds without one. Stuck in a rut!

Any suggestions on private (not over exaggeratedly priced) colleges that take people with no leaving or junior cert? Or any hairdressers that are looking for apprentices? :( I've literally been looking for years, i've applied to belfast (peter marks) numerous hairdressers in waterford, carlow, kilkenny etc, I've applied to ballyhale, enniscorthy, wcfe, all to no avail, i've even looked into it through fás, and they won't take anyone without a leaving cert.

I'm not sure where you got the idea where you need your LC in order to do a hairdressing FETAC course via FAS. I'm pretty sure this is untrue. I don't think you even need a junior cert - your age and other factors are taken into account, and although not in hairdressing I know of several people who would have left school without taking any exams and have undertaken Fas training.

another option, if you qualify for Job Bridge, would be to try and get some basic experience that way in overall duties in a hairdressers and then hopefully this will help you get a proper hairdressing apprenticeship. You could also look for a part time job as a junior in a hairdressers - not exactly an apprenticeship, but you get your foot in the door sweeping up and making tea/coffee and when you prove you are a hardworker and are interested then you might get an apprenticeship.

A second option would be to see if you can complete your junior cert at least via Fas - just enough subjects to get you by.

The final option would be to apply to somewhere like David Marshall, or Lunatic fringe or similar who offer a training school. You will have to pay, and I'm not sure of prices but if you are that determined perhaps save as much as you can and then give it a go.

In fairness, you have to see things from the employers point of view. You have literally 1 day working in a hairdressers - its not really a lot to convince someone you are certain that hairdressing is definitely for you. In addition you have completed courses in other disciplines, 2 of which would be more suited to beauty therapy than hairdressing - again it gives the impression that you don't really know what you want. I think you need to go in on the absolute ground floor - i.e sweeper-upper and then use that as a way to show you would make a useful and good apprentice. No one wants to spend weeks, months or even a year training an apprentice only for them to turn around and say 'eh actually I'm not really into it'!

You definitely don't need a leaving cert for FAS, but you will need some experience before hand. Do a week or two in a salon and put your name down.

Best route by far is through FAS.
