Why would the Entertainment customers be paying for the Sports customers?

    I think they always did.

$ky have been putting the prices up fairly regularly over recent years. And only going one way, those EPL footballers wages aren't cheap you know.

Just glad they get nothing from me.

Is it a breach of T&C's if they put up the price? Can you get out of contract?

When you consider the competition that Sky face in the UK for pay tv and compare the paltry opponents in Ireland and it would seem pretty apparent that prices will go up in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Our prices went up in Feb. I seriously doubt they'd have the cheek to attempt a second increase in the same year. Besides, our prices are already higher when you convert sterling to euro.

Not only will the prices in the UK be going up by 10% ... But they will also be cutting ESPN and ESPN Classic from the Sports Pack.

Sky have already said (on my bill I think it was) that it will be automatically removed from my subscription at the end of July and that I didnt have to do anything myself with regards to cancelling it.

BT will have ESPN as a separate package so no surprise there

There's also a £10 option where you have the sky + functionality with only free to air channels.

Well, that was an easy prediction, since Sky never have price reductions.

It's just a matter of when prices go up...

I dont think they will go up after the recent rise in February. their churn rate in Ireland must be at least 15 to 20% during the summer going by the amount of people getting free deals this month to try and keep them.

It will probably be next year for an Irish price rise but who knows. They have very little competition even with Eircom planning their new tv service at the end of this year it wont compete unless they can get BT sport or something like that all inclusive to tempt people away.

Years ago it was quite common to have 2 price increases a year. But remember they did have a price freeze here for nearly 2 years.

The only thing that is worth subscribing to is sport. Movies shouldnt be a premium sub now and all the general entertainment channels are nothing to get excited about either. But for me its far too overpriced now for whats on offer.

I switched to Freesat about 3 months ago using a Humax Foxsat I still get all the channels (other than the SKY specific channels such as SKY 1, SKY atlantic). I used to pay over €70 per month I now pay no subscrition and I dont miss the SKY channels at all, in fact the only SKY channel that I would have watched regularly was SKY News and I still have that on Freesat. With the Humax box I still have all the other functions of SKY+ including HD, series link and record and the hard drive is much bigger than on the SKY box that I had. I would certainly recommend the Freesat option to anyone who isn't addicted to the actual SKY channels.

How does the EPG functionality compare. One thing Sky has in its favour is the ease of use of the EPG. How does the Humax compare ?

The EPG is actually quite good, the only thing is you don't have the Irish channels on the EPG. Freesat is much better than FTA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭Newonhere

I have found very little difference in the EPG in appearance and functionality between Freesat and SKY

if sky put this charge onto us Irish customers im leaving, enough is enough, were already paying far too much.

10% is madness - these boys are now completely taking the p*ss with these bloated prices.

To be fair I would say that $ky's EPG and general operation is a lot quicker and slicker than the Humax. Plus the Humax remote is very temperamental - it needs to be relatively close and at a fairly straight angle to be recognised.

But the Humax costs me £0 per month and $ky cost me £42 per month, so I can live with it.

Where can one get the specs of a Humax box? Looking at getting one...if it is good.

Here a link to the manual, should find what you're looking for in there
    http://www.freesat.co.uk/files/8413/6382/4633/Humax_Foxsat_HDR.pdf

Barring the remote not being recognised as easily as the $ky one, its a great box. I have had mine over 2 years now (bought 2nd hand) and I have yet to have a failed recording, whereas I had them quite often on my $ky+ box.

I have the 1tb Freetime box, I have none of the issues you describe.

I have never had trouble with the humax remote. I also have a programmable remote that covers all the functions too, and controls everything else.
