    Hi all,

I am looking for a diesel car for a family of four. I have 9000 in cash and I also have a 2004 Opel Vectra to trade in that's worth around 2000 so in total I have €11000 to spend.

I'm hoping to get a diesel that is as efficient as possible on diesel but also has good road tax and can fit the family.

I was looking at getting a 2009 Renault Megane 1.5dci. But people have been telling me that Renault are very expense for servicing and repairs.

    Any ideas?

    Evd.

Would you like a car as big as the vectra?

Something a bit smaller would be better.

Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30 estates would get my vote. Decent spec available, good diesels and bargains can be had on the estates

I would be interested in the Focus, Ceed & i30.

    2008 Focus 1.7 Diesel. 60+ MPG. 280 yearly tax. €11,995
    2008 Ceed 1.6 Diesel. 62+ MPG. 270 yearly tax. €9,995
    2008 Hyundai 1.6 Diesel. 54+ MPG. 270 yearly tax. €9,500

I think the Ceed is probably the best choice as it seems to have the best MPG and also it would have 2 full years worth of warranty left.

Has anybody here had a Ceed and also would it be good to buy a Ceed with 77,000 miles on it or should I look to get one with lower mileage. I don't know what to think as I wouldn't buy a petrol car with that much miles but diesels I know are different.
Would any specific work need to be done at 100,000 miles?

    Evd.

I cannot for the life of me understand how there would be such a "claimed" difference in mpg between the Ceed and i30 considering they are basically the same car underneath sharing the same engine.

The limit of the Kia's warranty is seven years or 150000 kms just beware that you could reach that on the car within a year.

I know nothing about cars. That is purely what came up for me when a googled make, model and year specifications. Educate me if you will, I'm a computer person. Not so good with cars :P

I was unaware of the 150000km. I don't think I would reach this before the end of the warranty as I would do only 9000miles per year. So the 7 years and 150000 would come around the same time.

If you are only doing 9k miles per year you really should be looking at petrol or hybrid cars over diesels.

I need diesel as I can claim a certain amount back from work but they only payout for diesel and not petrol.

At the moment they will only pay out if I have to travel further than I would if I am travelling to work. I still get a certain amount for depreciation, tax etc but not on fuel. If I have a diesel I will get €100 fuel allowance per month + extra for longer than usual distance to work.

If you are getting work to foot the fuel bills why not get a 535D?

Personally I wouldn't be into a BMW and work aren't footing the bill entirely either. If they were I would love to get the Chevy Volt.

Why is mpg such a concern if you're only travelling 9k a year? If it must be a diesel the civic hatchback would be my choice. Work colleague of mine has one and its a lovely motor, nicer than the ceed or i30 and you should be able to get an 08 version with the new tax band for around 11k. 50+ mpg too.
