    Hi ,

I hope this is the right section for this .

On a recent trip to Finland we brought back a reindeer hide , and want to hang it on the wall .

What's the best way to do this without damaging it ?

I don't really want to just hammer a load of nails into it :D and destroy it .

    Thanks .

you could make a 2 squares out of 2x1s or similar and clamp the hide between and stick that to the wall.. Use rubber strips if you think it could damage it.

Or lay the hide out on a light piece of plywood and trace the outline, cut out the shape with a jigsaw and stick the hide to that and hang it on the wall

fix 2 screws into the wall the required distance apart. tie some string between the two screws.
then use clothes pegs to hang the hide from the string

Would you make a rug out of it instead maybe??

trace the shape of the hide onto marine ply cut out the shape then tack the hide onto it

Its simple really. Get some thin glass and make a picture frame style thing... well without the frame. Just get the glass and a wooden backing and sandwhich the hide in-between the two. The more money you spend on the glass the better. Cheap glass will make it look tacky and obvious. More expensive slimmer glass you wont even notice it.

Alternatively, get some strong magnets. Drill a hole in the wall and push the magnet in so its flush. THen hold the deer hide over them and the put smaller magnets onto the hide on top of where orignal magnets in the wall are. You can spray the smaller magnets so they're same colour as the fur and you'd never see them. Zero damage to the hide and no messing with glass.

Lastly, you could look into the various glues out there. Find a good one and stick some velcro patches onto the back of the hide and stick it up that way. Im sure you'll find a glue that wont damage the hide and will be easily removed when needed.

I'd rather mount it on the wall , thanks :)

I think the shop even suggested that it was mainly for use as a wall covering rather than a rug .

I just forgot to see how they had them hanging on the wall .

I think this is the best option , mount it on a sheet of wood .

It means it'll keep it's shape and can be moved if required .

    Thanks for the replies .

Dont mount it on the wall unless it has some sort of covering between the hide and the wall itself.Reason, the hide will start to breed all sorts of nasties in the air gap, with dust, motes and temp differential and darkness between the "raw" side of the hide and the wall, especially if it is a stone wall .If it is wood wall it isnt too much of a problem for some reason.

What most hunters on the Continent do is get a green felt or baize material applied over the raw skin side which is either glued on or stitched in some cases. This makes it last for years.

Also for hanging, bog standard picture loops[ flat things that have a loop and are mounted on the back of pictures to give a flush hanging effect] pop rivited at all four points.IE the four legs and then hung with standard picture hooks works fine. The fur brushed over the pop rivit hides it completely.

Apologies for the late reply .

The hide seems to be treated / cured .
    I'm assuming that shouldn't be a problem ?

I can upload a picture if that helps .

Doesnt matter...Of course it is cured otherwise you would have a nice smelly maggotty bit of skin.:D What happens, and from experiance of hanging my first shot fox pelt on a wall in my bedroom many moons ago ,is as it is dark and the cool stone is touching the skin all sorts of creepie crawlies get in behind it,they are like microbe size and live in dust and spores. They start to breed and react with the treated skin or the chemicals in it and before you know it the skin is starting to get somewhat frayed and tatty looking.
It is quite common too with stuffed animals in taxidermy.
The older the display the scruffier it is.In olden times they used to include aresnic poision in the mount body to kill off these insects.
Also unfortunatly, many over enthusastic young gun dogs also died by retriving their masters stuffed duck or whatever. It is why many old stuffed birds and whatever are kept in glass domes or cases to prevent this accident and dust mote damage.

Direct sunlight on it will also damage it too in bleaching and destroying the hair pigmentation. Hence you need this felt material barrier underlay or hang it on a wooden wall.
