Can anyone recommend somewhere nice to stay for a couple of nights near Alicante?

I'd like it to be somewhere near/at the sea but not Benidorm!

I don't know the area at all and will be driving up from Costa Almeria, so am hoping to find somewhere nice for a couple of nights.

    Thanks :)

    Hi,

We stayed in the Meliá Hotel, it is ok. The rooms are a bit tired but the rest is quite good. We stayed there 2 years ago at end of March and I dont like to put you off but thought Alicante was not up to much, one night would be fine in it. We were there 4 nigths and I thing that was the problem, it is very small and so we saw it all very quickly. But if you are going for a beach type of holiday rater than exploring it would be fine as the beach is quite nice.

Have a look at the Playa de San Juan(Sant Joan) area, just outside Alicante. Google Streetview will give you an idea of what it looks like. :)

I'd also recommend Calpe. We (2 families of 4,children aged 10-15)stayed in Altea,an area just out of Calpe. It is a lovely area. Calpe itself has fabulous beaches, lots of eating spots,shops,supermarkets- all you would need. There is a lovely buzz bout the place without it being a crazed hot spot.

Elche is a nice town just north of Alicante. I can highly recommend Hotel Jardin Milenio.

Javea / Xabia...lovely place, about 90 mins drive. Good beach, fishing port old town centre. Mostly retired expats and spanish tourists, you can avoid the flashing lights and horrors of benidorm.

    thanks everyone.
going against everything I wanted (ie: didnt really want to stay in a city, Alicante), I'm looking at the Sol Melia in Alicante at the moment.

    Prices are quite good.

Just need to find out what there is around to do with young kids
