3rd / 4th year split class

Just been notified that my son's school is losing a teacher, which will involve splitting 4th class between 3rd and 5th class. My son will be going into 3rd class, and I think that this will mean that there will be around 35-40 pupils now in one class. Is this something I should be worried about? Im not 100% convinced the teacher is able for this, she's quite young and only has a couple of years teaching experience.

I'd be worried about the number in the class ,rather than the split itself.

if there was 35-40 there should be enough pupils to warrant an extra teacher.
I think the pupil to student ratio is currently 30:1.

Ideally Moonbeam, but the number of teachers in a school is decided by the overall number of pupils. So they may be only 20 kids coming into junior infants, so the pupil numbers are not high enough to get another teacher and you can't just put 10 kids from 4th class into junior infants to even out the numbers.

I know there are currently 25 in my sons class, so assuming a similar number in the other class, it would mean 38 students. I can't understand how this can be considered an acceptable situation, are there any legislations regarding this?
Anything I can arm myself with for the meeting??

I don't know why you need to 'arm' yourself with anything just yet to be honest. The teachers and principal will be just as put out by this split as the parents. If it could have been avoided I'm sure it would have been.

Wait until you find out the exact number in the class before taking too much action. If it's north of 33/34 the school should probably have found some other way of arranging numbers. But depending on the enrolments in each class this might not be easy.

Believe me I know that the school will have done everything in its power to resolve the issue, the school is fantastic in that respect. What I want to know is there anything that us parents can do, it has to be harmful for our childrens education. I worry not just about their education but their social skills as well, I'm lucky in that my fella is bright and vocal and not a bit shy. But he does have 'special needs' not in a learning way but he has a disorder that requires monitoring, how can this be safely done with such large numbers, its not fair to the teacher if nothing else!

I want to be able to know that we have all done our very best to sort out the situation and not just give it up as a done deal.
