    Quick question
do vets have to give out P.O.M medican over the counter with a prescription or is it only giving out as part of a call out?
    thanks

Say you call to vet shop and ask for X which is POM do you get it or does vet have to actually call first

I thought this thread said "vets and porn" when I glanced first :D

I got a few prescription only meds from my vet a few times. It was during lambing, and they nearly always had been out before that and seen what was happening (eg. I had a few ewes that needed to be induced, all with the same condition, so after the first one I just rang the office and said I had the same issue again, and called in for the prescription)

Our vets are fairly sound like that , they would look for a tag number , and write out full instructions and dose rates .

normally just have enough to cover me for an emergency. Dont go ott. but often see orders for other farmers that i would think are totally excessive

Its likely becauee of the drug involved.nuflor is a powerful high end and very effective antibiotic....unfortunately with all the issues of antibiotic resistance around the pressure is being put on vets to stop giving out the high end antibiotics without seeing the animals and when on farm to treat each individually rather than give out a bottle......give it a few years and these sort of antibiotics will not be available to vets and farmers as the levels of resistance in humans is rising so cutting the human effective ones from the food chain will be one of the consequences. given the circumstances he should have given you a one off dose for that calf though seeing as he had been on farm already for similar problems.Giving out the bottle would have been bad practice however.

How much residue is making it's way into the human food chain from beef and dairy? AFAIK most dairy co-op's test to a more stringent level than required by law/regs for antibiotics as many of their production processes rely on bacteria at some point an therefore anti-bacterials don't work well for them. In the case of beef I would have thought the use of antibiotics in finishing cattle was relatively low, these are usually young fit animals in their prime and especially during the grazing season would not have much disease pressure.

I imagine most of the resistance humans are building up against antibiotics is being caused by the misuse of antibiotics on themselves. I know of plenty people who have taken antibiotics for the cold and flu, obviously not knowing that the antibiotics were of no benefit to them. Whatever about vets, I think much more damage is being caused by some doctors writing unnecessary prescriptions.

My vet would give out pom over the counter but he would be selective with who gets it.

i know when i bring my kids to the doctor they are normally very sick and i would be rather annoyed if after scraping together the 45 euro to get there he said he wasnt prescribing anything, while i fully understand alot of people are on antibiotics that shouldnt be i think there is just cause for a triage system for gps aswell as hospitals...as also alot of people dont finish their course of antibiotic which normally means their ailment isnt treated properly.

Not only is their ailment not treated properly but leaving bacteria alive after being exposed to the antibiotic is a big problem. These bacteria can then form a resistance to the antibiotic.

Not wanting to tar everyone with the same brush but people that dont have to pay to see a doctor and dont have to pay for the medicine will generally take advantage of the system and go to the doctor whereas they wouldnt if they had to pay. With two adults and two children in my house, we have to make sure we are sick before visiting the doctor. Obviously the children take priority.
