I came across this beast in the toilet, thought at first glance it may have been a small bat. Didn't put up much of a struggle lifting it back out the window. Has anybody any ideas on what species of moth it is?

I'll take a stab at it and say a Poplar Hawk Moth? (open to correction though...)

It is a Poplar Hawk-moth, a widespread and common species in Ireland.
They need to warm up before flying. They do this by twitching their wing muscles for a couple or more minutes. So they are quite easy to handle when at rest.
