    Hi,
Got the new gates delivered this morning, they have been dipped and are now ready to paint.
Is there one paint better than the other and would I be better going to get a sprayer and paint them as opposed to hand painting?

Presume I need to prime and then paint?

    Thanks

You can get electrostatic paint sets now that works a bit like powdercoating.
You hook a lead to the gate and another to the gun and the spray clings to the gate.
Spray is definately better then brush. Spray blasts into the texture of the metal, whereas brush will always miss a bit and show up later as rust!

When you say dipped, do you mean hot-dip galvanized? If so you will need to use an etching primer or wash down with a proprietary treatment in order to paint. Otherwise allow the galvanise to weather for a few years (cheapest option!).

I f you have just had them stripped then you had better prime them yesterday because they will begin to rust before your eyes!

Galvafroid primer or something similar would probably be the way to go.

They are new gates and were hot dipped.

@CJhaughey - When you say hook a lead, what do you mean exactly? Can you go out and buy a kit like that?

OP we have used Combicolour by Rustoluem for metal doors, gates, balconys etc.

Having only being using it for 3 years or so, but it's standing up pretty well and still looking good. They say its a one coat system, however we have used there primer and two top coats on the majority of our work, and i'm pleased with it.

Usually painting practices apply, make sure its clean and sound before applying any paint.

Thanks for that, so need to give it 1 primer and 2 coats? How long to dry between coats?
Presume thats with a spray machine?

    Thanks

No Yop thats with a brush and a small rad roller to work it into the metal. We roll about 95% of our metal work. It's an oil based system, fairly heavy gear. Primer goes off pretty quick( i think!), where as the top coats will have to be left overnight between coats.

Think it retails for €40-50 for a 2.5l.

Just to mention, if they are not already hung, try and hit the underneath of them with a coat or two prior to hanging them Just so much easier.

Ah right, dont mind either to be honest, have a sprayer which I though would be a better finish.
    Any specific roller?
The gates are circa 2*8ft by 5ft. Wonder how many litres of each I would need?

    Thanks for all your advice.

I'd say you would get about 10m2 per liter.. And by all means go ahead and use a sprayer, its just in most cirumstances it's not viable for us to break one out.

Good luck, post a pic on completion

Have never used a sprayer for paint myself, so it would be new to me so I may end up fkpping it up :) Roller might be better by probably slower.

I will of course, was surprised at the weight of them!!! :)

Yes, I saw one in a hardware shop recently, it wasn't that expensive.
I can't remember if it was triflow or rustoleum or another brand.
I'll see if I can find it.

Used a roller before to paint/restore an old sheet metal gate.

Flew through it with a roller and a small 2 inch brush for the edges and corners or the box steel frame.:)

Also mixed in a small bit of Owatrol Oil into the paint too,jet before applying.

    Worked a treat.:)
