Weird Fender Precision Serial Number

    Hi.

    Tried out a 70's fender precision bass in a store yesterday.
    The serial number looks very odd. It doesn't even seem to be a serial number.
    Attached is a photo of the "serial number".
    Can anyone shed some light on this?

    That's not the serial number. The serial number is round the back of the headstock. Those are fender patent numbers.

    Ah, cheers mate. Thought the serial number would always be on the usual spot!!

    The front of the headstock isn't the usual spot for any current Fender guitars that I'm aware of.

    That's a patent number. I think it's only Mexican Fenders and some US Fenders that have the serial number under the logo, normally it's on the back of the headstock

    Cool. Didn't realise that.
    I've looked at 5 USA 70's fender precisions recently, and 4 of them had the serial number under the logo.Cheers.
