If I put my Yongnuo (for Nikon) on my Canon G15....

Will it work? Will there be a loud bang, a puff of blue smoke and the smell of melting plastic???

Obviously I'd be using the flash in manual mode, but my simple question is will a Canon hotshoe safely trigger a Nikon flash?

it will most likely not work (depends on sync pins lining up)

But isn't there a common central pin on all hotshoes (and flash units) that would fire it?

There are indeed common pins that will trigger manual flash but nothing more, so you might be in luck. Which Yongnuo is it?

The worst case scenario is it just wont work so I'm fairly certain you're not running any risk of damaging either the flash of camera.

    It's a YN468-II. I'll give it a go this evening.
