Price of Student Accomodation vs a Shared house

It seems the general rule is paying for Student Accommodation in a lump sum. We might not be able to scrounge together that amount going in to my first year, so how is shared house style of living in the respect of deposits in Maynooth when it comes to cost?

Off campus is much cheaper! By as much as a grand a year.

People here will be able to give you great advice about the best and worst places to live in Maynooth when the time comes to living here, but you don't have to worry about that yet.

Student Services give out a list every year of approved landlords and their details - these fly out fast and is worth snapping up.

And all student accommodation is listed on Daft.ie.

Personally I'd advocate sharing a house - great experience and a great introduction to adult life - but there are others here who lived on campus and will be able to tell you much more about it.

Just make sure you grab the housing lists early, because as Banquo said, those houses fly fast

Sounds like my kinda party. :D

Seriously though whats more fun, on campus or shared house? I remember when I was in DCU there were so many restrictions for campus folk.

Maynooth has very few restrictions. They can be a bit strict on parties sometimes but that's about it. Nowhere near the ridiculousness of DCU.

they have a printed version of the list available as handouts outside their office.

or you could ask someone very nicely and they could send it to you *hint*

From my experience, if you get offered a place and explain that you can't manage to get the cash together in one go, they can accommodate you. Usually they prefer getting the cash in one go, as it hasn't been unheard of for people to abscond without paying in the past.

Alt_Grrr could you send me the housing list please :)

also, the residence office allow people to pay rent weekly in certain circumstances, one of my house mates from last year paid his rent weekly via standing order

    Hello there,

This might not be the most appropriate thread for the following question, but I don't think it's a complete miss.

I've just applied for the on campus accommodation. And seeing as we won't find out the results of the draw for another week or so, I was just wondering how hard is it to find a nice place during (or around mid) August? Am coming to NUIM Maynooth this fall as an Erasmus student and am looking for accommodation just for the winter semester. :-)

    Thank you in advance!

Not very hard! In fact, it's often cheaper.

Landlords like to get tenants signed up as soon as possible so they know that a room will be taken. But, the later in summer it gets, the more desperate they get for tenants so you can negotiate a cheaper rent or the prices advertised begin to fall.

I got a room as late as November a few years ago. You'll be fine!

Thank you, that is reassuring. :-) Am looking forward to the whole experience ^^

this gives me hope. i wont get up to view houses until tuesday so im hoping there wont be nothing there. do u know are all the houses that are available on daft and rent.ie or is there other sites with houses...also if a house say for 1 year or more, does that mean i have to rent it for the year or will they allow the 9 months

    thanks

Guys I think my only option left at this stage is to rent a twin room with an ensuite with a girl I know, but the thing is the room is 85euro per week per week and thats without any bills on top of it, does that not seem very expensive for a shared room?

Its just very odd for it to be that high... like thats pretty much the price of a shared room in river apartments including bills
