Advice for a Bangladeshi-style wedding for an Irish bride!

    Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some advice please?

My fiancé, who is from Bangladesh, and I are getting married in August this year. I suppose you could say our wedding is a mix of Irish and Bangladeshi style, although I am aiming for as Bangladeshi as possible (although it is in the Registry Office). But I have no clue about Bangladeshi weddings, so my advice is coming through my partner and his brother and other friends. He does not have any female Bangladeshi/Indian friends/acquaintances here so I'm a bit short on females advice, such as tips regarding dress, hair, makeup, henna, jewellery and any other bits and pieces that are relevant.

I have a beautiful sari which his brother brought from Bangladesh, and an Indian lady is sewing the blouse piece for me and helping to dress it for me on the day. She is also doing my henna for me, and I bought some bangles, a necklace, earrings, the piece for your hair (I don't know what it is called) and a clip-on nose stud from her shop. Am I missing anything? Is there anything that is expected of an Indian/Bangla bride? Should I buy my future husband a gift for the wedding day? Is there are any customs that would be traditional, for example, an Irish bride would wear 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue' on the day? How difficult is it to walk in a sari??!

I suppose I'm looking for any tips that anybody feels is relevant for me!

Thanks so much in advance for any help :)

Have you considered getting a cheap flight to London and going to Bangladeshi clothes shopping over there. I know there is a fair amount of Indian clothes shop, so I guess there would be the same for Bangladesh.

Also try samias on mary street, Dublin 1. Its very middle eastern and south east Asian

labelladejour - thanks very much, that article is very helpful! We're getting married August 6th - very excited! :):) Had some sample henna done on one hand over the weekend and it is so beautiful! Can't wait for the real thing :)

hfallada - I hadn't thought of that! I have a sari and jewellery that my fiancé's brother brought over from Bangladesh, but it is definitely an idea that will be useful in the future, thank you!
